Il faut commencer par replacer l'homme carolingien dans son cadre géographique. A -t-il idée de la diversité de peuples, de langues, de coutumes de cet immense empire ? Comment se déplace-t-il ? D'autre part, il faut tenir compte de la faiblesse démographique : les Carolingiens sont perdus dans un monde naturel hostile. Ils se regroupent en villages, cités monastiques, résidences princières et villes. Dans la société carolingienne, s'opposent deux groupes : les puissants aristocrates laïcs et ecclésiastiques, gravitant autour de la cour royale, qui, par leur éducation, leur genre de vie, leur aptitude à la guerre, leurs richesses, dirigent l'empire. Les autres, les paysans libres ou esclaves, les marchands, les juifs, dépendent étroitement des puissants. Les Carolingiens sont aux prises avec les problèmes de la vie matérielle. Il faut exploiter la terre pour se nourrir difficilement ; les artisans ruraux et urbains fabriquent de quoi se vêtir, s'équiper et se loger. L'époque carolingienne est réputée pour être l'âge de renaissance intellectuelle et religieuse. Ecoles et ateliers de scribes sont à l'origine du renouveau. Les clercs et les moines ont le monopole de la culture. Ils éduquent les aristocrates laïcs et assurent le "salut " du peuple. Toute la vie religieuse est centrée sur la prière liturgique. Les Carolingiens qui vivent difficilement par suite des guerres et des fléaux, doivent rechercher des protecteurs ; d'abord le roi, premier justicier, mais aussi les grands, et enfin l'Eglise.
