Book Concepts in Plant Metabolomics

Download or read book Concepts in Plant Metabolomics written by B.J. Nikolau and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-09-03 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like genomics, which defines genes in a genome irrespective of functionality, metabolomics profiles all metabolites in a biological sample irrespective of the chemical and physical properties of these molecules. Metabolomics can potentially define cellular processes by providing a measure of the ultimate phenotype of an organism, characterized by the collage of small molecules whose levels of accumulation is altered in response to genetic and environmentally induced changes in gene expression.

Book Step Wise Protocols for Somatic Embryogenesis of Important Woody Plants

Download or read book Step Wise Protocols for Somatic Embryogenesis of Important Woody Plants written by Shri Mohan Jain and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World population is increasing at an alarming rate and this has resulted in increasing tremendously the demand for tree products such as wood for construction materials, fuel and paper, fruits, oils and medicines etc. This has put immense pressure on the world’s supplies of trees and raw material to industry and will continue to do so as long as human population continues to grow. Also, the quality of human diet, especially nutritional components, is adversely affected due to limited genetic improvement of most of fruit trees. Thus there is an immediate need to increase productivity of trees. Improvement has been made through conventional breeding methods, however, conventional breeding is very slow due to long life cycle of trees. A basic strategy in tree improvement is to capture genetic gain through clonal propagation. Clonal propagation via organogenesis is being used for the production of selected elite individual trees. However, the methods are labour intensive, costly, and produce low volumes. Genetic gain can now be captured through somatic embryogenesis. Formation of embryos from somatic cells by a process resembling zygotic embryogenesis is one of the most important features of plants. In 1958, Reinert in Germany and Steward in USA independently reported somatic embryogenesis in carrot cultures. Since then, tremendous progress in somatic embryogenesis of woody and non-woody plants has taken place. It offers a potentially large-scale propagation system for superior clones.

Book Protocols in Human Molecular Genetics

Download or read book Protocols in Human Molecular Genetics written by Christopher G. Mathew and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-03 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extraordinary advances have been made in the field of human molecular genetics during the past five years. The ability to amplify a specific region ofDNA a millionfold in a few hours using the polymerase chain reaction has led to the rapid identification of mutations in human disease and of DNA sequence polymorphisms on every human chro- some. DNA fragments of up to 1 megabase in length can now be resolved by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis to create long-range physical maps of important regions of the genome, and can be cloned in the form of yeast artificial chromosomes. The discovery of highly variable "minisatellite" DNA sequences has led to the development of DNA fingerprinting. The application of these techniques to the study of the human genome has culminated in major advances such as the cloning of the cystic fibrosis gene, the construction of genetic linkage maps of each human chro- some, the mapping of many genes responsible for human inherited d- orders, genetic fingerprinting of forensic specimens, and the detection of mutations involved in the development of human tumors. Although many of the new techniques in molecular genetics can be learned relatively easily, it is often difficult for a researcher to obtain all of the relevant information necessary for getting up a technique and applying it successfully. The information available in the research lite- ture often lacks the depth of description that the new user requires.

Book Gel Electrophoresis of Proteins

Download or read book Gel Electrophoresis of Proteins written by B. D. Hames and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1998-10-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of Gel Electrophoresis of Proteins is a completely new text, with eight of the ten chapters written by new authors. It presents the best methods, hints and tips for core procedures such as one- dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, isoelectric focusing, two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, preparative gel electrophoresis, and peptide mapping, complete with the latest refinements and updates of the procedures. In addition, it describes major new techniques which have come to the fore since the previous edition. Thus there are chapters on capillary gel electrophoresis, sequence analysis of gel-resolved proteins, fluorophore-labelled saccharide electrophoresis, and analysis of protein:protein interactions by gel electrophoresis. One thing has not changed. The emphasis is still on describing the best methods, in step-by-step detail, with copious advice to ensure that each method works first time in the reader's hands. The first two editions of Gel Electrophoresis of Proteins: A Practical Approach each gained a strong reputation as easy-to-follow laboratory manuals written by experienced researchers for researchers. The methods were presented in a clear accessible format and had been fully tested to ensure success in the lab. This new edition will strengthen the reputation of the book still further. It is a 'must have' for all those who currently use gel electrophoresis or who plan to do so.
