This book looks at the history of the legends of St. Nicholas and how he evolved in America to Santa Claus. Primarily, this book seeks to point out the anti-Christian message of St. Nick/Santa Claus. Christmas is a celebration of the Lord of the universe coming to earth to take our place in death to pay for our sins. Scripture records that our salvation is “by faith, not by works, lest anyone should boast.” Meanwhile, Santa waddles onto the Yuletide scene by warning children that they better be good, or they will not get any presents. Throughout the ages St. Nick has been used as a political pawn, as a spokesperson for a particular product or service and as a model of what the Church and any well-meaning Christian must do for others. However, St. Nicholas of legend is recorded as uttering legalistic advice to those he meets. He never comforts or assures with the rich Gospel message, nor does he give glory to God for any “miracles” he performs. This book sets out to teach parents about the truth of this jolly elf. In educating parents, the message may help them determine to what extent they play the “Santa game” with their children. Like Virginia O’Hanlon, we live in a cynical age. Santa has lost much of his luster. In the movies we have a serial-killer Santa and Santa ́s that curse and swear. We see Santas that are impatient with the young charges who come to sit on their lap and request their presents. Tim Burton’s T’was the Nightmare Before Christmas portrays a Santa who scares and frightens young children. On college campuses and in many workplaces, A Visit From Saint Nicholas is reworked and reworded to portray an alcoholic oaf who barges in on Christmas Eve. In song, Santa ́s uncontrollable reindeer run down grandma. Teenagers rework Rudolph the red-nose reindeer as—surprise-an alcoholic. Regional groups often have humorous songs at Santa’s expense that often put the jolly elf in a bad light. The legends and myths of Santa are seen as fraudulent. The expectations of the elf for us “mortals” are seen as unapproachable. The promises and threats are seen as empty and hollow. The cynicism of this caricature is certainly in place. In the dialectical development of the Western monotheistic religions, Judaism plays the role of the “thesis”, of the origins and background for the rise of Christianity and Islam. With the rise of Christianity, Judaism was progressively marginalized, since it was denied the same essence and validity of Christianity, which grew immensely in terms of spiritual and secular power. Christian scholars since the Middle Ages looked at Judaism as at the “broken staff” in the evolutionist line of religion, to quote the insightful work of the late Frank E. Manuel. At the same time, while re-discovering Judaism, Christian scholars redefined themselves, and Christianity as well. However, while Christianity encompassed many sects and many nations, the relatively weak diversity within Judaism, the religion of a single nation, seemed to hinder its evolution and development. While the intellectual battle was fought in a scholarly way, the emergence of the Christian State condemned the Jews to perpetual discrimination and occasional toleration, until a lay State, Nazi Germany, threatened the survival of the Jewish people. Neutral controversial works became powerful extermination tools when used in the political arena. This volume casts light on some crucial episodes in the long dialectics within the same intellectual and religious framework, touching upon themes such as the conception of time future in the age of Spinoza, the early encounters of Judaism and Christianity in eighteenth-century England, the memory of the Shoah, and the political revolution present in the system of the Jewish Commonwealth. From early to late Modernity, there is a history of friendship and diffidence, mutual understanding and dramatic disagreements, which, even today, largely conditions the Western intellectual world.

The works of art created in his honor, as well as the rituals practiced at his fifteenth- and sixteenth-century places of burial, advertised Antoninus' saintly power and persona to the people who depended upon his intercessory abilities to negotiate life's challenges. Drawing on a rich variety of contemporary visual, literary, and archival sources, this volume explores the ways in which shifting political, familial, and ecclesiastical aims and agendas shaped the ways in which St. Antoninus' holiness was broadcast to those who visited his burial church. Author Sally Cornelison foregrounds the visual splendor of the St. Antoninus Chapel, which was designed, built, and decorated by Medici court artist Giambologna and his collaborators between 1579 and 1591. Her research sheds new light on the artist, whose secular and mythological sculptures have received far more scholarly attention than his religious works. Cornelison draws on social and religious history, patronage and gender studies, and art historical and anthropological inquiries into the functions and meanings of images, relics, and ritual performance, to interpret how they activated St. Antoninus' burial sites and defined them in ways that held multivalent meanings for a broad audience of viewers and devotees. Among the objects for which she provides visual and contextual analyses are a banner from the saint's first tomb, early printed and painted images, and the sculptures, frescoes, panel paintings, and embroidered textiles made for the present St. Antoninus Chapel.
