Download or read book Development Ethics written by Asuncion Lera St. Clair and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 663 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional definition of development ethics considers the 'ethical and value questions posed by development theory, planning and practice' (Goulet 1977: 5). The field parallels the traditional question of ethics 'How ought one to live as an individual?' by asking in addition 'How ought a society exist and move into the future?' This interdisciplinary field is well represented by a substantial collection of previously-published articles and papers. The volume illustrates a wide range of academic and practitioner writings on the theories and concepts of development ethics as well as ethical development policy and practice.

Download or read book Quranic Philosophy written by Abbas M. al-Akkad and published by Arkan for Studies, Research and Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I have seen some people deny religions in the modern age in the name of Materialism. Thus, they borrowed every characteristic and necessity from religion’s characteristics and necessities, and never spared the religions’ elements of faith and belief that have no basis but mere believing and emotion. Then they stripped religion from its strength that it spreads into the depths of the soul because they indeed made it up and did not attribute it to its original source. Believers in this Materialism ask their adherents to disbelieve in everything but matter, and to believe that universes are created from that matter in sequential courses where each course is broken up at its end and then recommences in a new course infinitely time after time. They also ask their adherents to wait for the everlasting bliss on this earth whenever their predictions about disappearance of social classes come true. There is no religion that places on its followers a burden of a belief weirder than such belief, nor does any religion place a burden of submission more complete than such submission”. By these words at the end of the introduction of Quranic Philosophy, al-Akkad indicated his target behind this work, which is one of his feats and exploits. As he go interviewing philosophers about their views on some social and life issues on which Islam introduced perceptions that have always been the focus of Materialism criticism to prove through his interviews that religion does not smash intellect, crash mind, oppose, contradict, hostile or stand an adversarial position against them. Quranic Philosophy is a small book with a tremendous value on the spiritual and social philosophy of some of the topics stated in the Noble Quran. Although its title and topics seem to be far from jurisprudence justification, yet the truth is that dealing with the topics stated therein falls directly and explicitly under the umbrella of justification. Al-Akkad discussed some issues like judgments concerning women, marriage, inheritance, captivity, punishments, acts of worship and other issues, where he discussed their reasons and logical wisdom. Yet, al-Akkad moved further from topics of jurisprudence justification to discussing the philosophy of Quranic discourse in terms of science, morals and creed. Nevertheless, his discussion on such issues has been concise with no connection to branches just as his discussion on the Sharia rules stated in the Noble Quran. Arkan Centre for studies, research and publishing preferred taking care of this invaluable book to broaden its impact scope by translating it to English for the first time. The aim is not to defend Islam or deny the charges, yet to signify the momentum of thinking and enhancing minds, root for knowledge and speech culture and encourage ripe intercultural operations between Arabic language and the rest of world languages.

Download or read book Markets of Civilization written by Muriam Haleh Davis and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2022-08-08 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Markets of Civilization Muriam Haleh Davis provides a history of racial capitalism, showing how Islam became a racial category that shaped economic development in colonial and postcolonial Algeria. French officials in Paris and Algiers introduced what Davis terms “a racial regime of religion” that subjected Algerian Muslims to discriminatory political and economic structures. These experts believed that introducing a market economy would modernize society and discourage anticolonial nationalism. Planners, politicians, and economists implemented reforms that both sought to transform Algerians into modern economic subjects and drew on racial assumptions despite the formally color-blind policies of the French state. Following independence, convictions about the inherent link between religious beliefs and economic behavior continued to influence development policies. Algerian president Ahmed Ben Bella embraced a specifically Algerian socialism founded on Islamic principles, while French technocrats saw Algeria as a testing ground for development projects elsewhere in the Global South. Highlighting the entanglements of race and religion, Davis demonstrates that economic orthodoxies helped fashion understandings of national identity on both sides of the Mediterranean during decolonization.
Download or read book The Mudimbe Reader written by V. Y. Mudimbe and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prominent francophone thinker and writer from sub-Saharan Africa, V. Y. Mudimbe is known for his efforts to bridge Western and African modes of knowledge and for his critiques of a range of disciplines, from classics and philosophy to anthropology and comparative literature. The Mudimbe Reader offers for the first time a ground-breaking work of modern intellectual African history from this essential postcolonial thinker, including new translations of essays previously unavailable in English. Constituting an intellectual history of the humanities in the late twentieth century from an African intellectual’s point of view, The Mudimbe Reader provides an introduction and a comprehensive bibliography that frame four thematic gatherings of Mudimbe’s writings. Part 1 bears witness to Mudimbe’s attempts, as a university professor in the new nation-state of Zaire, to balance the postindependence discourse of authenticity with his training in Western philosophy and philology. Part 2 focuses on Mudimbe’s exploration of racial, ethnic, and religious discourses to reflect upon postcolonialism in Zaire and in the United States. In the third part, Mudimbe interrogates ancient Greek and Latin texts as a strategy to engage the legacy of antiquity for European and African modernity. Finally, the book concludes by focusing on visual culture and Mudimbe’s recurring attempt to elucidate how African "primitiveness" has been constructed, challenged, dismissed, and reinvented from the Renaissance to the present day.

Book excerpt: Presents a rebuttal of the cultural reductionism of Max Weber and others who have tried to explain the politics and society of the Middle East by reference to some unchanging entity called 'Islam,' typically characterised as instinctively hostile to capitalism. Download or read book Social Dialectics written by Anouar Abdel-Malek and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1981-06-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civilisations and Social Theory takes as its starting point the present as the most decisive period of the transformation of the world since Europe's rise to hegemony in the fifteenth century. If we are adequately to comprehend our times, the author argues, it is necessary to adopt a cross-cultural perspective based on the historical dialectical method and following the path of meaningful comparativism. From this perspective the book provides a detailed critique of Orientalism. The notion of "the Orient" is reassessed and its usefulness reasserted against such operational concepts as the "Third world" and the "Underdeveloped South."
