Download or read book Production des Connaissances en Sciences Sociales en Afrique written by Moulio Moungbakou and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2022-02-11 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the epistemological, ethical and methodological challenges faced by African scholars in their research practices. The epistemological domain addresses three interrelated topics: how African university students ethnocentric choice of research topics hampers the production of knowledge; researchers adaptation of their research methods to improve validity; and the challenge of knowledge production on community museums plagued by gross inertia, irregularities, uncooperative gatekeepers and inadequate funding. The methodological domain foregrounds issues around scientific rigour, the criteria for what counts as quality research, and reporting standards. Contributors contend that the use of mixed methods provides the best scope for the effective study and evaluation of social issues. They also detail how better-funded projects tend to improve the respect of ethical standards especially as they pertain to the protection of subjects confidentiality. Self-financed researchers on the other hand tend to be less compliant, a challenge that afflict especially younger and inexperienced researchers. This volume thus contributes not only to a critical understanding of the challenges faced by social scientists in contemporary Africa, but also the prospects and mechanisms on how to improve knowledge production processes.

Download or read book On the Normal and the Pathological written by Georges Canguilhem and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by MICHEL FOUCAULT Everyone knows that in France there are few logicians but many historians of science; and that in the 'philosophical establishment' - whether teaching or research oriented - they have occupied a considerable position. But do we know precisely the importance that, in the course of these past fifteen or twenty years, up to the very frontiers of the establishment, a 'work' like that of Georges Canguilhem can have had for those very people who were separ ated from, or challenged, the establishment? Yes, I know, there have been noisier theatres: psychoanalysis, Marxism, linguistics, ethnology. But let us not forget this fact which depends, as you will, on the sociology of French intellectual environments, the functioning of our university institutions or our system of cultural values: in all the political or scientific discussions of these strange sixty years past, the role of the 'philosophers' - I simply mean those who had received their university training in philosophy department- has been important: perhaps too important for the liking of certain people. And, directly or indirectly, all or almost all these philosophers have had to 'come to terms with' the teaching and books of Georges Canguilhem. From this, a paradox: this man, whose work is austere, intentionally and carefully limited to a particular domain in the history of science, which in any case does not pass for a spectacular discipline, has somehow found him self present in discussions where he himself took care never to figure.
Download or read book Participatory Action Research written by Jacques M. Chevalier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a fundamental problem in applied social science and educational research: the widespread difficulty researchers and students from all disciplines face when trying to combine people-based and evidence-based research into complex social settings characterized by uncertainty and the unknown. More than ever, researchers need flexible means and grounded theory to inquire and step into challenging situations that do not lend themselves to straightforward technical explanations and solutions.
Download or read book Justice in the Workplace written by Matthieu de Nanteuil and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-28 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book explores new social justice challenges in the workplace. Adopting a long-term perspective, it focuses on value conflicts, or ethical dilemmas, in contemporary organisations and ways to overcome them. Matthieu de Nanteuil demonstrates that the existence of value conflicts is not in itself problematic, but problems arise as actors do not have a frame of justice that allows them to overcome these conflicts without renouncing their deeply held values.

This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporations, business groups and other business organizations are increasingly concerned about social challenges that directly impact the future of capitalism. Colombia s Fundación Social (FS) a century-old Latin American business group has from its start operated under two different but closely intertwined rationales: as a market, profit-seeking player; and as a civil society organization practicing solidarity. Social aims are at the core of FS mission, and business firms are instrumental. Remarkably, despite decades of growth as a ranking business group, FS underlying objective remained grounded in concern for the poor: To fight the structural causes of poverty.
Download or read book Science Technology and Society written by Giampietro Gobo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-09 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science, Technology and Society: An Introduction provides students with an accessible overview of the interdisciplinary field of Science and Technology Studies (STS). The discipline breaks down traditional conceptions of knowledge as universal, neutral and ahistorical, and takes a more critical approach to science and technology as social embedded phenomena. This comprehensive textbook makes use of unique examples and case studies to illustrate theoretical debates and concepts. In addition, the reader acquires a unique vision of contemporary issues (such as the power of algorithms, the mystification of fake news, the role of experts within the decision-making process, for example). Each chapter incorporates pedagogically rich features, including interactive discussion points to be used individually or in class as prompts for debate.

Download or read book La repr sentation institutionnelle dans l ordre international written by Evelyne Lagrange and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative publication maps out the broad and interdisciplinary field of contemporary European social theory. It covers sociological theory, the wider theoretical traditions in the social sciences including cultural and political theory, anthropological theory, social philosophy and social thought in the broadest sense of the term. This volume surveys the classical heritage, the major national traditions and the fate of social theory in a post-national and post-disciplinary era. It also identifies what is distinctive about European social theory in terms of themes and traditions. It is divided into five parts: disciplinary traditions, national traditions, major schools, key themes and the reception of European social theory in American and Asia. Thirty-five contributors from nineteen countries across Europe, Russia, the Americas and Asian Pacific have been commissioned to utilize the most up-to-date research available to provide a critical, international analysis of their area of expertise. Overall, this is an indispensable book for students, teachers and researchers in sociology, cultural studies, politics, philosophy and human geography and will set the tone for future research in the social sciences.

Download or read book Mouvements sociaux et logiques d acteurs Les ONG de d veloppement face la mondialisation et l Etat au Maroc written by Bouchra Sidi Hida and published by Presses univ. de Louvain. This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
