Sous l’impulsion de Mr Nicolas Sarkozy, Président de la République, la France a rejoint le commandement de l’OTAN. Elle prend alors une part plus active dans la politique internationale. L’objectif de cette étude est de mettre en évidence l’intérêt de la présence de chirurgiens dentistes des armées en opérations extérieures. En métropole le chirurgien dentiste va avoir plusieurs missions : les aptitudes au service outre-mer des militaires, et leur mise en condition opérationnelle. En opération ses missions se partagent entre le soutien aux forces françaises mais aussi aux forces étrangères ne possédant pas de dentistes dans leur contingent, et enfin une participation à l’assistance médicales aux populations. Pour pouvoir accomplir sa mission, du matériel est mis à sa disposition. En métropole, les plateaux techniques répondent aux normes européennes en vigueur et aux dernières données acquises de la science. Sur les théâtres, ce matériel est adapté aux diverses contraintes du terrain et des situations. On se retrouve à bord de certains bâtiments de la Force d’Action Navale, mais aussi dans des Abris Techniques Modulaires transportables par voie aérienne et maritime. Les recours d’expérience de l’activité dentaire mettent en évidence une forte activité générale. La présence du chirurgien dentiste sur le terrain permet alors de maintenir des unités opérationnelles, évitant leur rapatriement sanitaire pour des causes dentaires, couteux en hommes et en matériel, susceptible de compliquer la mission.

Book excerpt: Most recent research in generative morphology has avoided the treatment of purely morphological phenomena and has focused instead on interface questions, such as the relation between morphology and syntax or between morphology and phonology. In this monograph Mark Aronoff argues that linguists must consider morphology by itself, not merely as an appendage of syntax and phonology, and that linguistic theory must allow for a separate and autonomous morphological component. Following a general introductory chapter, Aronoff examines two narrow classes of morphological phenomena to make his case: stems and inflectional classes. Concentrating first on Latin verb morphology, he argues that morphological stems are neither syntactic nor phonological units. Next, using data from a number of languages, he underscores the traditional point that the inflectional class of a word is not reducible to its syntactic gender. He then explores in detail the phonologically motivated nominal inflectional class system of two languages of Papua New Guinea (Arapeshand Yimas) and the precise nature of the relation between this system and the corresponding gender system. Finally, drawing on a number of Semitic languages, Aronoff argues that the verb classes of these languages are purely inflectional although they are partly motivated by derivational and syntactic considerations.

The Malleus is an important text and is frequently quoted by authors across a wide range of scholarly disciplines. Yet it also presents serious difficulties: it is difficult to understand out of context, and is not generally representative of late medieval learned thinking. This, the first book-length study of the original text in English, provides students and scholars with an introduction to this controversial work and to the conceptual word of its authors. Like all witch-theorists, Institoris and Sprenger constructed their witch out of a constellation of pre-existing popular beliefs and learned traditions. Therefore, to understand the Malleus, one must also understand the contemporary and subsequent debates over the reality and nature of witches. This book argues that although the Malleus was a highly idiosyncratic text, its arguments were powerfully compelling and therefore remained influential long after alternatives were forgotten. Consequently, although focused on a single text, this study has important implications for fifteenth-century witchcraft theory. This is a fascinating work on the Malleus Maleficarum and will be essential to students and academics of late medieval and early modern history, religion and witchcraft studies.
