Le pharmacien d'officine a un rôle d'accompagnement de ses patients souffrants d'insomnie, d'une part en leur prodiguant des conseils d'hygiène de vie, de pratique d'une activité relaxante comme la méditation, mais également en étant en mesure de leur proposer d'autres médications, des alternatives complémentaires comme l'homéopathie, la phytothérapie ou l'aromathérapie.

Les données épidémiologiques permettent de démontrer une surconsommation de ces molécules en France mais aussi de nombreux mésusages ; abus, usages détournés ou criminels. Afin d'optimiser la consommation des hypnotiques, le pharmacien d'officine a un rôle particulier de conseils et d'orientation.
