La tesi sostenuta, rivoluzionaria ed “eretica” per l’epoca, era quella di considerare la figura di Gesù come un personaggio storico e sotto una luce umana e terrena. L’autore esamina pertanto la nascita, la predicazione e la morte del Cristo con lo sguardo, sempre partecipe e appassionato, dello storico e del filologo attento ai fatti e alle fonti. Concepita come parte centrale di una più ampia e successiva Storia delle origini del Cristianesimo, la Vita di Gesù conobbe un grandissimo successo di pubblico diffondendo in pochi mesi sessantamila copie e superando nelle vendite persino Madame Bovary. «Gesù nacque a Nazareth, piccola città della Galilea, che prima di lui non ebbe celebrità. In tutta la sua vita egli fu designato col nome di «Nazareno».» Ernest Renan nacque a Tréguier, in Bretagna, nel 1823. Avviatosi alla vita ecclesiastica, abbandonò il seminario nel 1854 in seguito a una crisi intellettuale e religiosa. Studioso di letterature semitiche, fu docente di lingua ebraica, caldea e siriaca al Collège de France. Pubblicò vari volumi di storia religiosa e di lingue semitiche. Morì nel 1892.
