Book Burlador de Sevilla Y El Convidado de Piedra

Download or read book Burlador de Sevilla Y El Convidado de Piedra written by Tirso (de Molina) and published by Hispanic Literature. This book was released on 1986 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tirso de Molina was, with Lope de Vega and Calderon, one of the great dramatists of 17th century Spain, which produced a theatre as vital rich and as varied as its Elizabethan counterpart. The Trickster of Seville is thoroughly representative of the drama of Spain's Golden Age: a drama of fast-moving action which set its face against classical precepts, broke the unities of time and place, cheerfully mixed the serious and the comic, combined main and sub-plots, and cultivated Spanish subjects and Spanish characters. In this respect Tirso's Don Juan is of course, the most famous character in the drama of the Golden Age, as well as the first of a long line which extends through Mozart and Moliere to the 20th century.

  • Author : Stefan Zweig
  • Publisher : Ishi Press

  • Pages : 154 pages

Download or read book AMERIGO written by Stefan Zweig and published by Ishi Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did Amerigo Vespucci discover America? He did not. Did he first set foot upon the mainland? He did not. Did he ever claim either of these achievements, or suggest that his name be bestowed upon this mundus novus? A proposal so audacious would never have occurred to him. By what grotesque coincidence, then, did "America" become the name of that new world which should have been called "Columbia"? In this erudite and witty book, Zweig untangles the snarl of accident and forgery that produced so astonishing a denouement. Once on the trail of this grandiose case of mistaken identity, Zweig fills in with rapid, revealing strokes the background against which it took place. He pictures the drugged world of the Middle Ages slowly regaining consciousness, reaching out to embrace all knowledge, to dare all unknown dangers, to grasp to itself the riches of an earth whose scope it had just begun to comprehend. He evaluates Vespucci's actual contribution to that greatest age of discovery, shows how an unsought notoriety was thrust upon him, and how he, the most honest and modest of men, was vilified for generations as a liar and braggart.

Book Butch Heroes

  • ISBN : 0262349965
  • Pages : 95 pages

Download or read book Butch Heroes written by Ria Brodell and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraits and texts recover lost queer history: the lives of people who didn't conform to gender norms, from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. “A serious—and seriously successful—queer history recovery project.” —Publishers Weekly Katherina Hetzeldorfer, tried “for a crime that didn't have a name” (same sex sexual relations) and sentenced to death by drowning in 1477; Charles aka Mary Hamilton, publicly whipped for impersonating a man in eighteenth-century England; Clara, aka “Big Ben,” over whom two jealous women fought in 1926 New York: these are just three of the lives that the artist Ria Brodell has reclaimed for queer history in Butch Heroes. Brodell offers a series of twenty-eight portraits of forgotten but heroic figures, each accompanied by a brief biographical note. They are individuals who were assigned female at birth but whose gender presentation was more masculine than feminine, who did not want to enter into heterosexual marriage, and who often faced dire punishment for being themselves. Brodell's detailed and witty paintings are modeled on Catholic holy cards, slyly subverting a religious template. The portraits and the texts offer intriguing hints of lost lives: cats lounge in the background of domestic settings; one of the figures is said to have been employed variously as “a prophet, a soldier, or a textile worker”; another casually holds a lit cigarette. Brodell did extensive research for each portrait, piecing together a life from historical accounts, maps, journals, paintings, drawings, and photographs, finding the heroic in the forgotten.
