Cette étude est le résultat d'un travail de terrain réalisé dans un centre de cancérologie (observation au sein des différents services d'imagerie et entretiens semi-directifs réalisés auprès de patients et de soignants) ; l'analyse porte ainsi sur cette pathologie et se divise en deux parties. La première entend étudier les machines d'imagerie en tant que médiatrices des interactions entre soignants et patients et s'appuie notamment sur le courant de l'interactionnisme symbolique. La deuxième partie s'attache à analyser plus spécifiquement le point de vue des patients et étudie l'apport de la visualisation des clichés d'imagerie durant leur parcours thérapeutique. Sont développés divers aspects, notamment le type d'intérêt que les patients attribuent à la visualisation de leurs clichés, le degré d'intérêt selon l'étape du parcours thérapeutique à laquelle ils se trouvent, la manière dont ils perçoivent leur corps sur un cliché. Sont également étudiés les facteurs et les variables sociales qui permettent de comprendre et d'expliquer des pratiques et des représentations distinctes selon les patients. A travers cette recherche, il s'agit de mettre au jour deux modes de pensées distincts ( scientifique et profane), chacun faisant appel à un référentiel propre (la culture médicale et l'histoire personnelle, la trajectoire de l'individu).
