Download or read book Jan ek and Czech Music written by Michael Brim Beckerman and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first week of May 1988, more than seventy scholars and musicians from five countries gathered at Washington University in St. Louis to participate in the first conference and festival ever to take place in the United States on the Moravian composer Leos Janácek. This volume, arranged in seven parts, is a collection of thirty-five of the papers presented at the conference. It is the first large collection of essays in English concerning Janácek's music, and the only collection of proceedings from a Janácek symposium to be published in the last twenty-five years... most of its essays deal with Janácek's music, while some with other Czech music, mostly from before the time of Bedrich Smetana. This breadth of scope is not a weakness of either the conference or the volume, since it places Janácek in historical perspective, and since the articles that deal with the earlier music are among the best in the volume and are deserving of a forum. John K. Novak, Notes June 1996

Download or read book The Operatic State written by Ruth Bereson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Operatic State examines the cultural, financial, and political investments that have gone into the maintenance of opera and opera houses in Europe, the USA and Australia. It analyses opera's nearly immutable form throughout wars, revolutions, and vast social changes throughout the world. Bereson argues that by legitimising the power of the state through universally recognised ceremonial ritual, opera enjoys a privileged status across three continents, often to the detriment of popular and indigenous art forms.

Book excerpt: Diplomats had multiple tasks: not only negotiating with the representatives of other states, but also mediating culture and knowledge, and not least elaborating reports on their observations of politics, society, and culture. Culture, according to the studies featured in this book, is defined as a complex sphere including aspects like systems of communication, literature, music, arts, education, and the creation of knowledge. This edition containing contributions from six conferences held in Vienna and Istanbul by the Don Juan Archiv Wien focuses on the complex diplomatic and cultural relations between the Ottoman Empire and Europe from the time of the early embassies to Istanbul up to "Tanzimat".
Download or read book Concertini per Quattro Voci written by Anthony Hart and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth century Sicilian Prelate, musician and composer Monsignor Antonino Reggio has been described by his contemporaries as 'a man of great intellect, erudite, and very deep in music, eminent for his skill in the art, and learning in the science of sound'. This short monograph highlights one of Reggio's works, a manuscript containing twenty quartets set for three voices. The work is unusually set for three sopranos and a contralto in the 'duetto notturno' style. The current work outlines the history of the three extant manuscripts of the work and considers them in the light of the 'duetto notturno' style. There is a detailed section on the original Metastasio texts, together with a comprehensive bibliography. It is planned to be a companion to the forthcoming critical performance edition, in preparation by the current author. Also it is a prelude to a more comprehensive biography of Reggio currently in preparation. .
