Book The Story of Jesus According to L

Download or read book The Story of Jesus According to L written by Kim Paffenroth and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1997-08-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using stylistic, formal and thematic criteria, Paffenroth reconstructs a pre-Lukan source (L) for much of the unique material in Luke 3-19. This source portrays Jesus primarily as a healer and teller of parables, a portrayal very different from that of the suffering Son of Man in Mark, the aphoristic teacher of Wisdom in Q, or the depiction of Jesus as universal saviour that Luke himself prefers. This source is quite primitive, probably earlier than Mark, perhaps as early as Q, to which it is quite similar in form, if not content.

Book A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ

Download or read book A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ written by J. Dwight Pentecost and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Study the life, ministry, and teaching of Jesus Christ in harmony—with all the relevant material from the Gospels placed side by side on the page and in chronological sequence. The goal of this volume by author and teacher J. Dwight Pentecost is to help you know Jesus better by getting a clearer picture of him through the four Gospels—the books that directly depict his life, his ministry, and his heart. To show the harmony of the gospels, passages are arranged in parallel columns when more than one is cited so that you can easily see the accounts beside one another. This simple, logical presentation of the complete parallel text with the outline greatly simplifies your study of Christ's life. A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ is ideal for use with its companion volume, The Words and Works of Jesus Christ, a comprehensive study of the life of Christ. A Harmony of the Words and Works of Jesus Christ also makes an outstanding parallel Scripture text for any study of the gospels or the life of Christ. All Scripture is in the New International Version (NIV).

Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Book Miracle and Mission

  • Author : James A. Kelhoffer
  • Publisher : Mohr Siebeck
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN : 9783161472435
  • Pages : 564 pages

Download or read book Miracle and Mission written by James A. Kelhoffer and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2000 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Longer Ending of the Gospel of Mark (Mark 16:9-20) was appended to the Gospel of Mark in the first half of the second century. James A. Kelhoffer explores this passage's distinct witness to the use of gospel traditions and the development of Christian thought. Concerning the origin of this passage, he argues that a single author made use of the New Testament Gospels in forging a more satisfactory ending to Mark. He studies the passage's sometimes innovative literary forms as well. Also of interest is the passage's claim that the ascended Lord will help those who believe to perform miraculous signs - casting out demons, speaking in new languages, picking up snakes, drinking poison with impunity and healing the sick - when they preach the gospel (verses 17-18, 20). This expectation is compared with portraits of miracles, especially in the context of mission, in the New Testament, various apocryphal acts and Christian apologists of the second and third centuries. In the two final chapters the author interprets the signs of picking up snakes (verse 18a) and drinking a deadly substance with impunity (verse 18b) in their history of religions contexts. An Epilogue summarizes the findings of this study and explores what can be ascertained about the otherwise unknown Christian author of Mark 16:9-20.
