Book Making the Most of Intercultural Education

Download or read book Making the Most of Intercultural Education written by Garry Robson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-06-18 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many different words are used to deal with diversity in education, such as cross-cultural, meta-cultural, polycultural, multicultural and intercultural, as well as terms like global and international. Some are trendier than others, some more political. Some of these words are used in certain parts of the world, while others are rejected. This volume concentrates on the notion of the ‘intercultural’ and makes sense of its polysemy in education. As such, in research and practice, my intercultural may not mean the same as your intercultural. My intercultural might have different values and ideologies than your intercultural. The contributors also propose considerations on how to make the most of ‘renewed’, critical and reflexive approaches to intercultural education in a breadth of contexts and countries, including Argentina, Australia, France, Iceland, Tunisia and the UK. The book will appeal to students and teachers, as well as to confirmed researchers who will gain inspiration and new insights into the increasingly contested notion of the ‘intercultural’ in education.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Education and Globalization

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Education and Globalization written by Jacqueline Behrend and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 1073 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The categories commonly mobilized to think about education have long been associated with the notion of the nation state, and functioned as obstacles, rather than resources, for our understanding of how globalization plays out in this particular field. In the last two decades, both social theory and comparative politics have attempted to overcome these limitations in their own way. Social theory increasingly acknowledged education as a global phenomenon. Theories have been developed to describe a global society evolving across borders. They show how, through processes that remain debated (cultural isomorphism, capitalism, functional differentiation), a number of structural and semantic evolutions have spread across education systems. Part I of this Handbook is dedicated to presenting, discussing, and comparing three such theories of globalization and their implications for our understanding of education and education policy. Comparative politics has for its part concerned itself with developing a more complex, less unified and 'transformationalist' view of the State by acknowledging the fragmentation and distribution of its functions among distinct domains and levels. Part II gravitates around this global constellation, with chapters focusing on global reforms, norms and ideas put forward by supranational organizations, on international accountability processes and on the ways in which nation states or local actors adopt, implement or resist global ideas and reforms. The two Parts reflect these disciplinary approaches to the relation between globalization and education. Together, these two approaches seek to provide a comprehensive overview of how globalization and education interact to result in distinct and varying outcomes across world regions"--

Whether used individually or with a group, this effective approach centers on improving educational services for students and optimizing their academic achievement. However, teacher supervision is influenced by ambiguities and several types of challenges related to the concept of supervision, the actors’ perceptions and beliefs, and the various systemic structures at play. This competency standards framework presents the knowledge, the know how to do, the know how to be, and the know how to become every successful teacher supervisor should possess, and proposes for each order a summary of existing literature and accessible theories. This competence reference manual will help supervisors acquire invaluable pedagogical and relational skills to perform high-quality, high-results supervision.

Download or read book The Seduction of Ethics written by Willy Carl Van den Hoonaard and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Formal research-ethics committees in Canada now function as an industry, costing over thirty-five million dollars annually. The Seduction of Ethics argues that while ethics codes are alluring to the public, they fuel moral panic and increase demands for institutional accountability. Will C. van den Hoonaard explores the research-ethics review process itself by analysing the moral cosmology and practices of ethics committees regarding research and researchers. The Seduction of Ethics also investigates how researchers have tailored their approaches in response to technical demands — leading social science disciplines to resemble each other more closely and lose the richness of their research. Van den Hoonaard reveals an idiosyncratic and inconsistent world in which researchers employ particular strategies of avoidance or partial or full compliance as they seek approval from ethics committees.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diversity, Oppression, and Change, Third Edition provides a culturally grounded approach to practice, policy, and research in social work and allied fields. The book's intersectionality perspective provides a lens through which students can identify connections between identities based on race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, social class, religion, and ability status. Through theoretical and empirical content as well as "Notes from the Field," students become familiar with the culturally grounded perspective and culturally appropriate ways of engaging with diverse communities. Marsiglia, Kulis, and Lechuga-Pe?a have crafted a book about hope and resiliency, the miraculous ability of individuals and communities to bounce back from oppressive experiences and historical trauma, and the role of social workers as allies in that journey.
