Indépendants en 1783, dotés depuis 1787 d'une constitution démocratique affirmant bien haut l'égalité et la liberté des hommes, les Etats-Unis n'aboliront pourtant l'esclavage qu'en 1865, trente ans après l'Angleterre. cette abolition s'est réalisée au terme d'une guerre civile atroce, la guerre de Sécession, qui a fait près d'un million de morts, ruiné le Sud et marqué jusqu'à nos jours la mentalité des Américains. Le nombre des Noirs, quasiment tous esclaves, était alors de l'ordre de 45 millions. Comment cette grande démocratie a-t-elle pu tolérer l'esclavage aussi longtemps ? C'est le paradoxe central de l'histoire américaine. Il est naturellement au cœur du livre de Claude Fohlen, lequel prolonge le paradoxe en souligant que l'abolition de l'esclavage a fait naître la " question noire ". En effet, au terme du conflit, les Etats-Unis ont échoué ou n'ont pas cherché à faire des anciens esclaves des citoyens à part entière, alors qu'ils assimilaient en même temps des millions d'immigrants. dans le domaine des faits comme celui du débat éthique sur l'esclavage aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, l'ouvrage de Claude Fohlen, nourri des recherches les plus récentes des historiens américains, est d'un vif intérêt.
