Il s’agit plus précisément d’une étude sur la santé des travailleurs dans l’entreprise mais aussi des populations résidant à proximité d’installations industrielles. L’accent est mis sur la particularité de la méthodologie suivie qui combine l’apport du droit (travail, social, environnement), de l’économie, de l’histoire et de la sociologie. L’objectif de cette thèse est aussi de démontrer au travers du temps et de l’espace l’affrontement entre santé au travail et environnement. Elle démontre aussi comment le droit et d’autres éléments ont permis un rapprochement puis une collaboration. Mais le décalage est manifeste entre le droit social, qui commence à apparaître à la fin du 19ème siècle (avec la révolution industrielle) et le droit de l’environnement qui apparaît près d’un siècle plus tard (en 1970, avec la crise économique). Cette thèse est illustrée sur le plan empirique par une étude réalisée au cœur de la région dunkerquoise et dont l’objet a été d’identifier les conséquences de la pollution de l’air sur les individus. Le questionnement était dirigé afin de retranscrire aux mieux les sensations ou les troubles éprouvés par les populations interrogées et de les traduire ensuite lors de l’analyse en effets sur la santé mais aussi en effets sociaux et économiques.
