La troisième partie est consacrée plus spécifiquement au travail du professeur dans sa classe. On y dégage des leviers pour l'enseignant et on y présente des contraintes qui pèsent sur l'ensemble du système. Des annexes proposent successivement : des exemples de séquences illustrant des analyses de la première partie, des réflexions sur l'enseignement en ZEP, un résumé sur la didactique des mathématiques comme champ de recherches, quelques éléments sur la différence entre les points de vue des chercheurs et ceux des enseignants, et enfin des bibliographies variées.

Almost 20 years later, does his claim still hold true? The present book is the result of the reflection of many individuals in mathematics education on this and related questions. Is mathematics education a science? Is it a discipline? In what sense? What is its place within other domains of research and academic disciplines? What accounts for its specificity? In the book, the reader will find a range of possible answers to these questions, a variety of analyses of the actual directions of research in different countries, and a number of visions for the future of research in mathematics education. The book is a result of an ICMI Study, whose theme was formulated as: `What is Research in Mathematics Education and What are Its Results?'. One important outcome of this study was the realization of the reasons for the difficulty of the questions that the study was posing, leading possibly to a set of other questions, better suited to the actual concerns and research practices of mathematics education researchers. Est-ce là une fatalité ? Faut-il se résigner à cette fonction sélective des mathématiques dans le lycée d'aujourd'hui, où elles occupent une place si centrale ? Sylviane Gasquet ne se résigne pas. Au cours des nombreuses années d'expérience pédagogique qu'elle a menées — en particulier celle du « lycée en quatre ans » — elle a appris que l'on ne peut plus se retrancher derrière la « théorie des dons », ou se débarrasser des élèves en difficulté en affirmant qu'« ils ne travaillent pas assez ». Elle sait que la manière d'enseigner les mathématiques, n'est pas neutre, que l'on peut introduire des difficultés inutiles ou artificielles, et compliquer, sans s'en rendre compte, des procédures simples. Mais elle sait que l'on peut aussi faciliter l'accès aux mathématiques, aider les élèves, les guider, les faire pénétrer dans des domaines de plus en plus complexes. Il n'est pas nécessaire, pour cela, de recourir à de savantes « technologies nouvelles », ou d'organiser des marches forcées à coups de leçons particulières... Mais il n'est pas question, non plus, de renoncer à ce qui fait la spécificité de la discipline mathématique. Il s'agit plutôt de débusquer les obstacles, qui se dressent trop souvent entre l'élève qui veut apprendre, et le professeur qui veut enseigner. Il s'agit de s'attaquer à ce mur de l'incompréhension mathématique, construit en grande partie par l'École elle-même, et dont Sylviane Gasquet montre, à l'aide de nombreux exemples, que l'on ne doit pas désespérer de sa chute, et que chaque enseignant peut, dans sa classe, y contribuer.

BISHOP The first International Handbook on Mathematics Education was published by Kluwer Academic Publishers in 1996. However, most of the writing for that handbook was done in 1995 and generally reflected the main research and development foci prior to 1994. There were four sections, 36 chapters, and some 150 people contributed to the final volume either as author, reviewer, editor, or critical friend. The task was a monumental one, attempting to cover the major research and practice developments in the international field of mathematics education as it appeared to the contributors in 1995. Inevitably there were certain omissions, some developments were only starting to emerge, and some literatures were only sketchy and speculative. However that Handbook has had to be reprinted three times, so it clearly fulfilled a need and I personally hope that it lived up to what I wrote in its Introduction: The Handbook thus attempts not merely to present a description of the international 'state-of-the-field', but also to offer synthetic and reflective overviews on the different directions being taken by the field, on the gaps existing in our present knowledge, on the current problems being faced, and on the future possibilities for development. (Bishop et aI. , 1996) Since that time there has been even more activity in our field, and now seems a good time to take stock again, to reflect on what has happened since 1995, and to create a second Handbook with the same overall goals.

Book excerpt: A significant driver of recent growth in the use of mathematics in the professions has been the support brought by new technologies. Not only has this facilitated the application of established methods of mathematical and statistical analysis but it has stimulated the development of innovative approaches. These changes have produced a marked evolution in the professional practice of mathematics, an evolution which has not yet provoked a corresponding adaptation in mathematical education, particularly at school level. In particular, although calculators -- first arithmetic and scientific, then graphic, now symbolic -- have been found well suited in many respects to the working conditions of pupils and teachers, and have even achieved a degree of official recognition, the integration of new technologies into the mathematical practice of schools remains marginal. It is this situation which has motivated the research and development work to be reported in this volume. The appearance of ever more powerful and portable computational tools has certainly given rise to continuing research and development activity at all levels of mathematical education. Amongst pioneers, such innovation has often been seen as an opportunity to renew the teaching and learning of mathematics. Equally, however, the institutionalization of computational tools within educational practice has proceeded at a strikingly slow pace over many years.
