Book The Development of Postsecondary Education Systems in Canada

Download or read book The Development of Postsecondary Education Systems in Canada written by Donald Fisher and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2014-08-31 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant public investment and increased access to higher education lead to economic development - governments across the political and ideological spectrum believe this and have designed and implemented policy based on this understanding. The Development of Postsecondary Education Systems in Canada examines how these policies affect the structure and performance of postsecondary education. This comprehensive study compares the evolution and outcomes of higher education policy in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec over the past three decades. The authors begin with an understanding that in order to explain the role of postsecondary education in society, they must locate systemic change. Drawing on documentary analysis and interviews, the focus is on how policy priorities are reflected in "system" behaviours: performance, funding arrangements, design, and structural components. Current theories about the liberal-democratic state, academic capitalism, and marketization inform discussions of the changing role of higher education in a globalized knowledge society. The book presents policy and education as a multidimensional exchange between the postsecondary community, policy makers, and the behaviour and performance of educational systems and concludes that higher education is a key actor in the restructuring of the state. The Development of Postsecondary Education Systems in Canada shows how higher education policy has been driven by a changing political and economic imperative and examines the contradictions and unintended consequences of education policy. Contributors include Jean Bernatchez (Université du Québec à Rimouski), Robert Clift (PhD candidate, University of British Columbia), Donald Fisher (University of British Columbia), Glen A. Jones (Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto), Jacy Lee (McMaster University), Madeleine MacIvor (University of British Columbia), John Meredith (independent consultant), Kjell Rubenson (University of British Columbia), Theresa Shanahan (York University), and Claude Trottier (emeritus, Université Laval).

Book Teaching The Imperiled Profession

Download or read book Teaching The Imperiled Profession written by Daniel Linden Duke and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1984-01-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is it really like to be a teacher today? Teaching--The Imperiled Profession goes beyond conventional analyses, to probe the profession and various threats to its viability. Daniel L. Duke has drawn on his own and current educational research--including surveys of teacher opinion, interviews with teachers, and press coverage of educational issues--to uncover and examine a complex array of factors that contribute to the troubled state of the profession and the unprecedented discouragement of its practitioners. The book also analyzes traditional sources of support. Teaching--The Imperiled Profession provides prospective teachers with a realistic picture of the profession today. It identifies a set of concerns on which citizens might reasonably focus attention, in order to forestall any future deterioration. It provides the educator, administrator, and policy-maker with a comprehensive set of recommendations for revitalizing the profession. The book also serves as a concise history of the teaching profession as it has developed in the United States during the twentieth century.

Book Politics of Collegiality

Download or read book Politics of Collegiality written by Cynthia Hardy and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1996-03-22 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Politics of Collegiality Hardy uses six case studies to explore how power and collegiality interact within institutional contexts during periods of fiscal restraint. Examining the funding cutbacks implemented by McGill University, Université de Montréal, University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, University of Toronto, and Carleton University, Hardy demonstrates that institutional context and retrenchment strategy are linked in such a way that what works in some institutions will not work in others. By offering insights into how financial restrictions have been managed in particular universities, these individual case studies provide a conceptual framework for understanding institutional decision making on a larger scale. Hardy reveals that university administrators must recognize this broader context if conflict is to be avoided and the consensus needed to implement effective retrenchment plans created.

Book The Liberal Arts College Adapting to Change

Download or read book The Liberal Arts College Adapting to Change written by Gary Bonvillian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social, economic, and market conditions have posed a serious threat to the survival of small schools. This book focuses on the adaptation of small, private, and predominantly liberal arts colleges to the changing conditions and demands of higher education. The ability of small schools to remain a force in the American system of higher education is a compelling story and an example of the strategic management of academic organizations. The history and accomplishments of one school in particular, Keuka College in New York State, is profiled in detail, with emphasis on the role of the administration and the faculty in institutional decision-making. The study found that the increasing pressures to respond quickly to external conditions require a willingness to make decisions that often challenge traditional norms in the relationship between administration and faculty. The book also examines recent initiatives of other schools to competitively position themselves Accepting the reality that all colleges and universities compete for students, small schools have demonstrated an extraordinary ability to apply new and creative management practices, many of which are examined in the book. In addition to academic leaders, other audiences such as boards, faculty, historians and scholars of higher education will find the book a valuable reference.

Book School Organisation RLE Edu L

Download or read book School Organisation RLE Edu L written by William Tyler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-16 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internal organisation of the school touches on many areas of contemporary debate. Is there such a thing as a ‘good school’? Are large urban comprehensives necessarily impersonal? Are the charges of indiscipline, conflict and declining standards in modern schools based on a failure to understand schools as institutions? At the time this book was first published sociological analysis had neglected to consider schools as organisational entities, preferring to see them as either the sites for negotiated encounters between teachers and pupils or else as agencies of class reproduction. The author redresses this imbalance and by relating the various literatures on the school to the constitutive patterns of its internal organisation he demonstrates the need for a more intensive sociological study of this embattled institution.
