La question de la ville et de l'enfant est posee a partir du moment ou on constate l'inadaptation de la ville aux enfants. La problematique de la relation entre l'enfant et la ville est elaboree selon une demarche globale et pluridisciplinaire, en considerant l'enfant dans sa multiplicite, ainsi que dans une perspective d'integration et de participation a la vie urbaine.

African populations have high growth rates and, consequently, relatively high proportions of young people. Population growth in rural areas has stretched resources leading to urban migration and a rapid growth of cities. Economies have not grown apace with the population; and in some countries, economies have even shrunk. The result is a severe lack of resources in cities to meet the needs of the growing populations, shown in high unemployment, inadequate housing, poor services, and often extreme poverty. All the essays in this book draw attention to such urban environments, in which children and youth have to live and survive. The title of this book speaks of negotiating livelihoods. The concept of ‘livelihood’ has been adopted to incorporate the social and physical environment together with people’s responses to it. It considers not only material, but also human and social resources, including local knowledge and understanding. It, thus, considers the material means for living in a broader context of social and cultural interpretation. It, therefore, does not deal only with material and economic existence, but also with leisure activities, entertainments and other social forms of life developed by young people in response to the dictates of the environment. The book contains country-specific case studies of the problems faced by youths in many African cities, how they develop means to solve them, and the various creative ways through which they improve their status, both economically and socially, in the different urban spaces. It recognizes the potentials of young people in taking control of their lives within the constraints imposed upon them by the society. Book excerpt: This book is about how work enters and affects the lives of children in Africa, taking for granted neither the traditional values surrounding children’s work, nor the international standards against it. Many African societies nurture their children on the ingrained notion that children must work as part of their process of growing up. Children participate in their families and communities through the work they do in the house and in whatever else their families do. Such views are, however, antithetical to the dominant views in Europe and North America which see childhood as a time of freedom from responsibility and economic activity. These views have become so popular with the elites in other countries to the extent that they now drive international campaigns against ‘child labour’, and have been incorporated into what are now considered universal international standards and conventions. This book was conceived within the framework of the CODESRIA tradition of taking African perspectives seriously and not allowing social research in Africa to become subservient to values from outside. African scholars remain keenly aware of the need not to isolate themselves from developments in the wider world, which could lead to stagnation. This book, through empirical observation of the lives of African children, the work they do, its place in their lives, and what the children say about it, proposes new perspectives towards a new understanding of this complex stage of human development. Work is not simply about the right to income: work provides identity and status in society, and participation in the community. People relate to one another through work. Those who do not work are often without status and are at the periphery of society. One of the major ways in which this book differs from most of the available literature is in the understanding it brings to the problem of ‘child labour’. There are economic reasons why children may need an income of their own. There is the demographic fact that the proportion of children to adults in low-income countries is nearly double that in high-income societies. This book attempts to demonstrate that work is both necessary and beneficial in terms of a child’s development to become a full, responsible, and respectable member of society.

Au-delà des périmètres géographiques et du cadre matériel, les espaces de vie sont aussi définis à partir de la vie sociale qui y prend place et des relations interpersonnelles (tout autant verticales qu'horizontales). Dans quelles mesures ces relations aux autres concourent-elles, délimitent-elles, ou encore produisent-elles les espaces de vie des enfants et des jeunes ? Observe-t-on des transformations des rapports interpersonnels dans les espaces de vie d'aujourd'hui et comment sont-elles vécues ? Enfin, l'exploration des rapports à l'espace des enfants et des jeunes suppose de considérer en amont tout autant les modèles de l'enfance que leur prise en compte dans les sociétés, en particulier par les politiques publiques. L'ouvrage réunit ici un ensemble de textes où les enfants et les jeunes sont observés et questionnés dans des espaces de vie variés, parfois très spécifiques de l'échelle micro (le logement) à l'échelle plus large comprenant le quartier, la ville, etc. dans des contextes internationaux originaux. Une sélection de textes qui permet autant de faire un état des lieux sur le rôle des espaces quotidiens dans la vie et le développement des enfants et des jeunes dans les sociétés contemporaines que de sensibiliser, grâce à l'approche pluridisciplinaire, aux démarches méthodologiques et empiriques, parfois très singulières, entreprises pour saisir et questionner le rapport à l'espace.

This book approaches experiences of urban aesthetics not as an established framework, defined by imposed norms or legislations, but as the result of a continuous reflexive and proactive gaze, a complex and deep engagement of the mind, body and sensibilities. It uses empirical studies ranging from China, India to Western Europe. Three axes are privileged. The first considers urban everyday aesthetic experiences in the long-term as a historical production, from medieval Italy to a future imagined by science fiction. The second examines the impact of aestheticizing everyday material realities in neighbourhoods, and the tensions and conflicts these engender around urban commons. Finally, the third axis considers these relationships as aesthetic inequalities, exacerbated in a new age of urban development. The book combines local and transnational scales with an interdisciplinary approach, bringing together historians, sociologists, cultural geographers, anthropologists, architects and contemporary art curators. They illustrate the importance of combining different social science methods and functional perspectives to study such complex social and cultural realities as cities.
