Book Culture and Customs of Cameroon

Download or read book Culture and Customs of Cameroon written by John Mukum Mbaku Esq. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cameroon, in Central Africa, has been called Africa in miniature. It is characterized by exceptional social and ethnic diversity, with more than 250 ethnicities now forming five major regional-culture groupings. This volume is the first to encapsulate Cameroon's rich indigenous and modern customs and traditions in depth. The narrative emphasizes those aspects that define its modern nation, its peoples, the unique societies, their institutions, and various lifestyles. The origins of Cameroon's diverse culture are traced back to the various ethnic groups and languages as well as the influence of European colonialism, Christianity, Islam, and other external factors, including globalization. In each topical chapter, examples from ethnic groups are presented to give some sense of the variety of experiences. Cameroon has had a turbulent and eventful modern history with German, English, and French incursions, and students and general readers will be able to understand the current struggle for democracy post independence. The history colors the substantial coverage of the many topics examined, from education, to marriage and women's roles, sports, and holidays, daily life, the arts, and much more. This volume will stand as the definitive, accessible introduction to Cameroon and will be essential for building a well-rounded Africa collection.

Book Transforming Rural Space Through Nongovernmental Efforts in Northwestern Cameroon

Download or read book Transforming Rural Space Through Nongovernmental Efforts in Northwestern Cameroon written by Lotsmart N. Fonjong and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to explore the involvement of NGOs in the development of a rural region of Cameroon that has attracted a large proportion of NGOs. The focal questions that are addressed in this volume are: what are the elements of rural development in the region and what are the forms of involvement, strategies, and impact of NGOs and their programmes on the lives of the rural masses? These questions provide the base for a critical assessment of the efforts of NGOs as a possible development myth, not only for Cameroon, but also for other developing societies.

Book Rapport Du Groupe de Travail de la FAO Sur L valuation Des Petits P lagiques Au Large de L Afrique Nord occidentale

Download or read book Rapport Du Groupe de Travail de la FAO Sur L valuation Des Petits P lagiques Au Large de L Afrique Nord occidentale written by FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagic Fish off Northwest Africa. Meeting and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth meeting of the FAO Working Group on the Assessment of Small Pelagic Fish off Northwest Africa was held in Nouadhibou, Mauritania, from 26 April to 5 May 2005. The meeting continued to focus on data quality and on the analysis of trends in the basic data (landings, catch, effort, abundance, length and age distribution) and trends in the fishery independent survey data. The structure of the report is the same as that of the previous Working Group report (FAO, 2004), with the addition of two chapters, one on bonga (Ethmalosa fimbriata) and one on anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus). A separate section is devoted to each of the main groups of species (sardine, sardinella, horse mackerel, chub mackerel, bonga and anchovy). For each of these, standardised information is given on stock identity, fisheries, abundance indices, sampling, biological data, assessment, management recommendations and future research. In the absence of reliable length and/or age compositions, the Working Group used production models for all stocks. The results of the assessments indicate that the sardine stock in Zone C is not fully exploited and the Working Group hence noted that the total catch level may be temporarily increased but should be adjusted to natural changes in the stock. A constant monitoring of the stock abundance and structure, by scientific surveys, independent from catch data, should be ensured, to detect unanticipated changes that may require urgent management measures. As regards the central stock of sardine (Zones A+ B), it is recommended not to increase catches above the average level of the last five years (600 000 tonnes). The stock of round sardinella was found to be fully exploited and it was hence recommended not to increase catches of sardinella above the current level of 400 000 tonnes (2004). As a precautionary approach, the Working Group recommended not to increase catches above the average level of the last five years for the horse mackerels (80 000 tonnes for Trachurus trachurus and 170 000 tonnes for T. trecae) and not to increase catches above the 2004 level for chub mackerel (220 000 tonnes). For bonga the Working Group recommended as a precautionary measure that the catch level should not exceed the average over the last five years (42 000 tonnes) and for anchovy the catch level should not exceed the average over the last three years (160 000 tonnes). In formulating the results of the assessments, the Working Group noted that it lacked a set of uniform reference points and management objectives for all stocks in the area. The Group noted that the selection of appropriate reference points required more time than was available during the meeting. It was therefore decided that some members will look further into this problem, working by correspondence, and present a working paper at the 2006 meeting. At that meeting the Working Group will attempt to agree on a common policy concerning the way it presents its management advice for the various stocks.

Book The Perils of Belonging

Download or read book The Perils of Belonging written by Peter Geschiere and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-08-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite being told that we now live in a cosmopolitan world, more and more people have begun to assert their identities in ways that are deeply rooted in the local. These claims of autochthony—meaning “born from the soil”—seek to establish an irrefutable, primordial right to belong and are often employed in politically charged attempts to exclude outsiders. In The Perils of Belonging, Peter Geschiere traces the concept of autochthony back to the classical period and incisively explores the idea in two very different contexts: Cameroon and the Netherlands. In both countries, the momentous economic and political changes following the end of the cold war fostered anxiety over migration. For Cameroonians, the question of who belongs where rises to the fore in political struggles between different tribes, while the Dutch invoke autochthony in fierce debates over the integration of immigrants. This fascinating comparative perspective allows Geschiere to examine the emotional appeal of autochthony—as well as its dubious historical basis—and to shed light on a range of important issues, such as multiculturalism, national citizenship, and migration.
