Download or read book L effet d un soutien l utilisation quotidienne du langage de signes pour b b sur le sentiment de comp tence parentale d une m re et d un p re written by Geneviève Boulet and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. »--

Download or read book Deaf in America written by Carol A. Padden and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1990-09-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by authors who are themselves Deaf, this unique book illuminates the life and culture of Deaf people from the inside, through their everyday talk, their shared myths, their art and performances, and the lessons they teach one another. Carol Padden and Tom Humphries employ the capitalized "Deaf" to refer to deaf people who share a natural language—American Sign Language (ASL—and a complex culture, historically created and actively transmitted across generations. Signed languages have traditionally been considered to be simply sets of gestures rather than natural languages. This mistaken belief, fostered by hearing people’s cultural views, has had tragic consequences for the education of deaf children; generations of children have attended schools in which they were forbidden to use a signed language. For Deaf people, as Padden and Humphries make clear, their signed language is life-giving, and is at the center of a rich cultural heritage. The tension between Deaf people’s views of themselves and the way the hearing world views them finds its way into their stories, which include tales about their origins and the characteristics they consider necessary for their existence and survival. Deaf in America includes folktales, accounts of old home movies, jokes, reminiscences, and translations of signed poems and modern signed performances. The authors introduce new material that has never before been published and also offer translations that capture as closely as possible the richness of the original material in ASL. Deaf in America will be of great interest to those interested in culture and language as well as to Deaf people and those who work with deaf children and Deaf people.

Book excerpt: The suite of forty prints published in Geneva in 1570 depicting the wars, massacres and troubles of the French Wars of Religion may have been the first picture history made in woodcuts or etchings that promised a geenral public a true view of great events of the recent past. This richly illustrated study reconstructs the gradual elaboration of this experimental work, situating it within the previously untold story of the use of the graphic arts to report the news in the fist centuries of European printmaking. Successive chapters explore the pictorial traditions that inspired the printmakers, examine how they gathered their information, assess the reliability of the scenes, and analyze the historical vision informing the series. Part 2 reproduces the full suite with commentary in double page fold-outs. Through the study of a single print series, lost chapters in the history of jorunalism, of the graphic arts, and of Protestant historical consciousness re-emerge.

Book The Judgment of Palaemon

Download or read book The Judgment of Palaemon written by Philip Ford and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Virgil's third Eclogue, Palaemon concludes the poetry competition between Menalcas and Damoetas by saying that he cannot choose between them, a judgment that is emblematic of the contest between Neo-Latin and vernacular poetry in Renaissance France. Both forms of poetry draw on similar roots, both are equally accomplished, and the contest between them is largely amicable. The Judgment of Palaement illustrates the almost symbiotic relationship between Renaissance Latin and French poetry, while exploring poets' motivation for choosing one language over another, the different challenges each form of writing involved, and the extent of the collaboration between different language communities. It focuses on some of the major writers of the period, as well as less known ones, and on genres specific to humanist poetry. It shows that composing in Latin was often considered more natural than writing in the vernacular, at a time when many Frenchmen's mother tongue was a non-standard French dialect or distinct language. Book Sign and Culture

Download or read book Sign and Culture written by William C. Stokoe and published by Linstok Press, Incorporated. This book was released on 1980 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a selection of papers that have appeared in the journal "Sign Language Studies" between 1972 and 1979. The aim is to provide the reader with some knowledge of the world as signers see it. The book is for academic decision-makers, teachers and parents of deaf students, as well as the intellectually curious. Following an introductory essay, the chapters are arranged in four sections: (1) The first section addresses the broad question "What is Sign Language?" with articles about the language merging situation involving manually encoded English and American Sign Language, as well as other aspects of sign language, including humor and foreign sign languages. (2) The second section on "Learning and Using Sign Language" gets deeply into a psycholinguistic vein, and presents findings on sign language acquisition and learning. (3) The third section, "(Sign) Language and Culture," relates sign language use and particular attitudes and policies to the deaf community. (4) The fourth chapter reinforces the idea that language is not all biological nor all socio-cultural, and applies this idea to sign language acquisition. (Author/PJM)

Download or read book Hamilton Stark written by Russell Banks and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2011-11-22 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hamilton Stark is a New Hampshire pipe fitter and the sole inhabitant of the house from which he evicted his own mother. He is the villain of five marriages and the father of a daughter so obsessed that she has been writing a book about him for years. Hamilton Stark is a boor, a misanthrope, a handsome man: funny, passionately honest, and a good dancer. The narrator, a middle-aged writer, decides to write about Stark as a hero whose anger and solitude represent passion and wisdom. At the same time that he tells Hamilton Stark's story, he describes the process of writing the novel and the complicated connections between truth and fiction. As Stark slips in and out of focus, maddeningly elusive and fascinatingly complex, this beguiling novel becomes at once a compelling meditation on identity and a thoroughly engaging story of life on the cold edge of New England.
