Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: L'OMNIPRESENCE DE L'ETAT DANS L'UNIVERS DU FILM EUROPEEN, EU EGARD AUX CRITIQUES QU'ELLE SOULEVE, NOUS CONDUIT, PRESENTEMENT, A UNE REFLEXION SUR SON ORIGINE : POURQUOI AVOIR INTRODUIT UN SYSTEME D'AIDES PUBLIQUES ? NOUS NOUS PROPOSONS D'EXAMINER CETTE QUESTION A TRAVERS DEUX CHAMPS D'INVESTIGATION : CELUI DES BIENS COLLECTIFS ET CELUI DES BIENS DE TUTELLE. NOUS VERRONS ALORS QU'EN S'IMMISCANT DANS LA PRODUCTION DE LONGS METRAGES, LES POUVOIRS PUBLICS PEUVENT NON SEULEMENT CHERCHER A SUPPLEER UN MARCHE DEFICIENT, MAIS EGALEMENT A CORRIGER LES PREFERENCES INDIVIDUELLES, ESSENTIELLEMENT DANS UNE OPTIQUE CULTURELLE. LE PROBLEME DU SOUTIEN PUBLIC NE S'ARRETE TOUTEFOIS PAS A CES SEULS ARGUMENTS. L'ETAT INTERVIENT AUSSI PARCE QUE LE CINEMA EST EN CRISE. POUR MIEUX COMPRENDRE CET ETAT DE FAIT, HORMIS ETUDIER EN DETAIL LA FILIERE, ON PEUT SE REPORTER AUX ANALYSES METTANT EN RELATION LE PROGRES TECHNIQUE ET LES CYCLES LONGS. ON DECOUVRE ALORS QUE C'EST LA TELEVISION, NEE PENDANT LA LONGUE PHASE D DE L'ENTRE-DEUX-GUERRES ET ETENDUE A TOUTE LA SOCIETE PENDANT LA LONGUE PHASE A DE L'APRES-GUERRE, QUI A CONDUIT LE SEPTIEME ART A SES DIFFICULTES ACTUELLES. CEPENDANT, AVEC LES TECHNOLOGIES RECENTES, QUI CONTRIBUENT A LA MULTIPLICATION DES CANAUX DE DIFFUSION ET, CONSEQUEMMENT, GENERENT DES DEBOUCHES ET FINANCEMENTS NOUVEAUX, IL SEMBLERAIT QU'UN CHANGEMENT DE SITUATION SOIT ENVISAGEABLE. D'AILLEURS, CONSCIENTES DE L'IRREVERSIBILITE DES TRANSFORMATIONS EN COURS, LES ENTREPRISES CINEMATOGRAPHIQUES CHOISISSENT FREQUEMMENT DE TRAVAILLER EN COLLABORATION AVEC LES DIFFUSEURS. POUR LE MOMENT, IL EST NEANMOINS INDISPENSABLE DE RETABLIR LA COMPETITIVITE DE NOS LONGS METRAGES, MAIS AUSSI DE TOUTES NOS FICTIONS, SOUMIS A UNE CONCURRENCE INTERNATIONALE POUSSEE A SON PAROXYSME. INDISCUTABLEMENT, LE CINEMA EUROPEEN EST UN SECTEUR CULTUREL EN CRISE QUI DOIT ETRE SOUTENU PAR LES POUVOIRS PUBLICS ET, DANS UN MONDE DE L'IMAGE EN MUTATION, ADOPTER DES STRATEGIES QUI LUI SOIENT PROPRES AFIN DE POUVOIR CONTINUER D'EXISTER CULTURELLEMENT ET ECONOMIQUEMENT.

This book was released on 2000-04-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The digitised spectacles conjured by a word like 'blockbuster' may create a certain cognitive dissonance with received ideas about French cinema - long celebrated as a model for philosophical, economic and aesthetic resistance to globalised popular culture. While the Gallic 'cultural exception' remains a forceful current to this day, this book shows how the onslaught of Hollywood mega-franchises and new media platforms since the 1980s has also provoked an overtly commercialised response from French producers eager to redefine the stakes and scope of their own traditions. From English-language action vehicles like Valrian and the City of a Thousand Planets (Besson, 2017) to revisionist historical films like Of Gods and Men (Beauvois, 2011) and crowd-pleasing comedies like Intouchables (Toldano & Nakache, 2011), the variously filiated 'local blockbusters' from contemporary France brim with the seeds of cultural contradiction, but also with the energy of a forceful counter-history. Cutting across a swath of recent French-produced cinema, French Blockbusters offers the first book-length consideration of the theoretical implications, historical impact and cultural consequences of a recent grouping of popular films that are rapidly changing what it means to make - or to see - a 'French' film today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Exception Taken, Jonathan Buchsbaum examines the movements that have emerged in opposition to the homogenizing force of Hollywood in global filmmaking. While European cinema was entering a steady decline in the 1980s, France sought to strengthen support for its film industry under the new Mitterrand government. Over the following decades, the country lobbied partners in the European Economic Community to design strategies to protect the audiovisual industries and to resist cultural free-trade pressures in international trade agreements. These struggles to preserve the autonomy of national artistic prerogatives emboldened many countries to question the benefits of accelerated globalization. Led by the energetic minister of culture Jack Lang, France initiated a series of measures to support all sectors of the film industry. Lang introduced laws mandating that state and private television invest in the film industry, effectively replacing the revenue lost from a shrinking theatrical audience for French films. With the formation of the European Union in 1992, Europe passed a new treaty (Maastricht) that extended its legal purview to culture for the first time, setting up the dramatic confrontation over the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) in 1993. Pushed by France, the EU fought the United States over the idea that countries should preserve their right to regulate cultural activity as they saw fit. France and Canada then initiated a campaign to protect cultural diversity within UNESCO that led to the passage of the Convention on Cultural Diversity in 2005. As France pursued these efforts to protect cultural diversity beyond its borders, it also articulated "a certain idea of cinema" that did not simply defend a narrow vision of national cinema. France promoted both commercial cinema and art cinema, disproving announcements of the death of cinema.

Exploring trends in production, distribution and exhibition, the book considers a range of national and pan-regional developments. Key areas of critical debate are highlighted, including private and public financing, co-production, film policy, links between the film and television industries, and the threats to 'art cinema' from within and without Europe.
