Book excerpt: È per me un grande piacere poter presentare oggi questo volume ai colleghi assiriologi e agli amici economisti e giuristi che parteciparono nel luglio del 2011 alla Giornata di Studi organizzata presso l’Associazione Bancaria Italiana. Esso raccoglie i contributi degli assiriologi e una serie di riflessioni di natura teorica che i colleghi del settore giuridico ed economico-finanziario hanno svolto sulla base di quelli. Da qualche anno un gruppo di orientalisti italiani che si occupano di storia economica dell’antica Mesopotamia ha cominciato a collaborare con economisti e giuristi al fine di creare un proficuo dialogo tra le due discipline che permetta il travaso di conoscenze e competenze utili a meglio comprendere il proprio specifico campo di studio. Sulla base di questa avviata cooperazione, è sembrato logico e, direi, quasi naturale organizzare, all’interno della Rencontre Assyriologique Internationale tenutasi a Roma nel luglio del 2011, un incontro in cui gli studiosi dell’economia antica e gli operatori economici del mondo attuale potessero dialogare direttamente tra di loro. Il fine era quello di creare un ponte che desse occasione a coloro che si occupano di gestire il mondo economico nella contemporaneità di apprezzare la profondità storica dei meccanismi finanziari ed economici in genere oggi esistenti. Al contempo, il confronto degli assiriologi con esperti degli aspetti teorici dell’economia e della legge senz’altro avrebbe aiutato gli studiosi del mondo antico a meglio comprendere i meccanismi che sottendono alle realtà che i loro testi, spesso solamente per accenni, presentano. Mi sembra di poter dire che i contributi contenuti in questo volume rispondano al meglio alle premesse su cui quella giornata era stata pensata. L’interesse sincero, e direi l’entusiasmo, con cui i nostri colleghi economisti e giuristi hanno affrontato le tematiche che gli assiriologi hanno loro proposto è infatti senza dubbio un fatto assolutamente innovativo che produrrà, ne sono certo, importanti collaborazioni nel futuro. Syria-Palestine in the Late Bronze Age identifies a particular political ontology, native to ancient Syro-Palestinian societies, which informs and constitutes their social worlds. This political ontology, based on patronage relationships, provides a way of understanding the political culture and the social dynamics of ancient Levantine peoples. It also illuminates the historical processes taking place in the region, processes based on patrimonial social structures and articulated through patron-client bonds.

In terms of research focusing on the emergence of one of the first statehood foci of human history—the pristine state of ancient Mesopotamia—, the author takes up evidence on a critical phase of early Mesopotamian social development. At the beginning of the third pre-Christian millennium, the men and women of Ur took up actions that decided whether the material and spiritual heritage of the preceding Late Uruk cultural-development phase (c. 3,500–3,200), when the first state, organized religion, sciences and the arts had emerged in ancient Mesopotamia, will stand up to the test of time, or whether it will vanish into thin air, as it happened in other civilizational complexes. The author has based his conclusions on the testimony of written texts, archaeology and iconography. Guided by this evidence, he portrays the ways and means by which the men and women of Ur treated the material and spiritual heritage of the Late Uruk civilization. Their activities defined the coordinates system within which the early Mesopotamian state subsequently developed through the nearly three millennia of its existence.

In La natura della moneta, con un linguaggio semplice e alla portata di tutti, Geoffrey Ingham, che non è un economista ma un sociologo, riesce meritoriamente a farci comprendere il concetto di moneta, la sua storia e le sue implicazioni per coloro che la usano quotidianamente (quasi tutti al mondo). L’autore si ricollega alle tradizioni intellettuali più eterodosse delle scienze sociali per costruire una nuova teoria: la moneta come pilastro delle relazioni sociali. Secondo Ingham, l’economia e la sociologia dominanti non sono state finora in grado di cogliere la specificità della moneta, per lo più considerata dagli economisti come un “velo” neutro che sottostà al meccanismo dell’economia “reale”. Partendo dalla definizione della moneta come “promessa di pagamento” socialmente e politicamente radicata, Ingham dà una nuova lettura analitica di fenomeni storici, come le origini della moneta, i sistemi monetari degli antichi imperi del Vicino Oriente e la coniazione in epoca greca e romana, fino all’affermazione della moneta-credito del capitalismo. Anziché concentrarsi sulle relazioni di produzione e proprietà, Ingham osserva che la peculiarità del capitalismo consiste nella struttura sociale (che comprende complessi collegamenti tra imprese, banche e Stati) attraverso la quale i debiti privati vengono “monetizzati” e che i “disordini” monetari come inflazione, deflazione e crisi valutarie sono solo una conseguenza del venir meno delle relazioni tra creditori e debitori. Con un’analisi sferzante e una concezione eterodossa della moneta, questo saggio, che fa chiarezza nel recente dibattito sulla nascita di nuovi spazi e nuove forme monetarie, è destinato a diventare un testo imprescindibile per capire quali siano i veri rapporti di potere nella nostra società.
