Pour autant, les doutes, les interrogations subsistent encore sur la pertinence, l'impact et la mise en oeuvre de cette prise en compte dans le quotidien de l'ecole. Tout d'abord, on observe une multitude de concepts pour analyser la diversite multiculturalisme, inter-culturalisme, integration, identite, assimilation... Quels sont, selon les contextes, les choix et les approches privilegies et les debats qui les entourent ? D'autre part, des interrogations de nature pedagogique se posent. Par exemple, quel est l'impact de la valorisation des cultures d'origine des eleves sur leurs resultats scolaires ? Quels sont les personnels charges de valoriser la diversite culturelle a l'ecole et comment procedent-ils ? Surtout, quelle est la portee attendue des politiques de reconnaissance: une amelioration des resultats scolaires des minorites ? Une reconnaissance du droit de chacun a une ou plusieurs identites ? S'agit-il d'un objectif societal (education a la tolerance, a l'antiracisme) ? Les initiatives existantes visent-elles des publics specifiques ou sont-elles concues pour transformer l'enseignement et l'ecole pour tous ? Les textes reunis dans ce numero 63 de la Revue internationale d'education de Sevres mettent en evidence l'actualite du debat sur ces questions dans plusieurs pays: Algerie, Bresil, France, Malaisie, Norvege, Portugal, Canada (Quebec), Suisse, ainsi que dans les instances internationales. A partir de points d'observation precis tels que le traitement de la diversite linguistique a l'ecole ou la formation des enseignants a la prise en compte de la diversite culturelle, par exemple, il est possible de mieux cerner les reponses apportees et de comprendre en quoi le debat sur les cultures a l'ecole reflete les debats sur la diversite socioculturelle dans chaque societe. Through the state-sanctioned construction of mass housing and development of towns on the outskirts of existing cities, a new world materialized where sixty years ago little more than cabbage and cottages existed. Known as the banlieue, the suburban landscapes that make up much of contemporary France are near-opposites of the historic cities they surround. Although these postwar environments of towers, slabs, and megastructures are often seen as a single utopian blueprint gone awry, Kenny Cupers demonstrates that their construction was instead driven by the intense aspirations and anxieties of a broad range of people. Narrating the complex interactions between architects, planners, policy makers, inhabitants, and social scientists, he shows how postwar dwelling was caught between the purview of the welfare state and the rise of mass consumerism. The Social Project unearths three decades of architectural and social experiments centered on the dwelling environment as it became an object of modernization, an everyday site of citizen participation, and a domain of social scientific expertise. Beyond state intervention, it was this new regime of knowledge production that made postwar modernism mainstream. Book excerpt: International comparisons of student achievement in mathematics, science, and reading have consistently shown that Japanese and Korean students outperform their peers in other parts of world. Understandably, this has attracted many policymakers and researchers seeking to emulate this success, but it has also attracted strong criticism and a range of misconceptions of the Japanese and Korean education system. Directly challenging these misconceptions, which are prevalent in both academic and public discourses, this book seeks to provide a more nuanced view of the Japanese and Korean education systems. This includes the idea that the highly standardized means of education makes outstanding students mediocre; that the emphasis on memorization leads to a lack of creativity and independent thinking; that students’ successes are a result of private supplementary education; and that the Japanese and Korean education systems are homogenous to the point of being one single system. Using empirical data Hyunjoon Park re-evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the existing education systems in Japan and Korea and reveals whether the issues detailed above are real or unfounded and misinformed.
