Notre hypothèse principale est que la fécondité a gardé un niveau moyen pour plusieurs raisons, notamment le contexte institutionnel, le traditionalisme religieux, la crise économique et la pauvreté, la situation politique, le rôle de la femme dans la société, le mariage précoce, la mortalité infantile et maternelle...Nous essayons donc de conceptualiser les effets des institutions du point de vue économique, social, politique et religieux sur les comportements démographiques, en particulier sur la baisse de la fécondité. Il s’agit d’étudier les facteurs qui influencent l’offre et la demande d’enfants et d’observer le contexte politique dans lequel la transition de la fécondité se produit. Nos données proviennent de plusieurs sources statistiques : l’enquête EFS de 1980 (volet Egyptien de l’Enquête Mondiale sur la fécondité) et les enquêtes Démographiques et de Santé (EDHS) de 1988, 1992, 1995, 2000, 2003. Nous utilisons aussi des données démographiques publiées : par l’Institut national de statistique égyptien (CAPMAS), par des agences des Nations Unies, par des ONG et par la Banque Centrale égyptienne.

In his newest book, Ramsay MacMullen investigates why the adoption of Roman ways was so prevalent during this period.Drawing largely on archaeological sources, MacMullen discovers that during this period more than half a million Roman veterans were resettled in colonies overseas, and an additional hundred or more urban centers in the provinces took on normal Italian-Roman town constitutions. Great sums of expendable wealth came into the hands of ambitious Roman and local notables, some of which was spent in establishing and advertising Roman ways. MacMullen argues that acculturation of the ancient world was due not to cultural imperialism on the part of the conquerors but to eagerness of imitation among the conquered, and that the Romans were able to respond with surprisingly effective techniques of mass production and standardization.

The aim of this collection of texts is to propose a number of specific measures member states can take to help adult migrants become acquainted with the language of the host country. The main focus is on organising language courses that meet migrants’ real communication needs. It is not enough for authorities simply to consider the technical aspects of such courses, they should also design and conduct them in accordance with the fundamental values of the Council of Europe. A number of issues concerning the linguistic integration of adult migrants are presented here, beginning with the notion of linguistic integration itself. Family reunion, the nature of citizenship and the function of language tests, among others, are dealt with from the point of view of language and language use. Readers are invited to reflect on the type of language competences that need to be acquired as well as an appropriate use of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The collection also sets out approaches and instruments designed to assist in implementing effective policies.
