Auteur de nombreux ouvrages et travaux scientifiques, il a publié à Présence Africaine, en 1967, un livre sur le Pouvoir politique traditionnel en Afrique occidentale. En 1971, il fait paraître aux mêmes éditions un autre ouvrage sur le Wolof Moderne. Ses recherches sur les langues et les civilisations africaines remontent à 1959. Elles font aujourd'hui l'objet de nombreuses publications. Toute économie qui se construit pose un problème à ses fins et moyens. Contre les hégémonies politiques, économiques et idéologiques, qui profilent leur domination, derrière les systèmes de capitalismes nationaux, le Tiers-monde est contraint sous peine d'être assujetti, de se structurer à l'image de la Chine, en champs de forces, en espaces d'équilibre. La construction de nations libres et développées est à ce prix. Ce livre axé sur l'Ouest Africain est un effort de réflexion en ce sens et dans ce contexte. Il pose la problématique de l'effort de libération et de construction d'un espace politique et économique, qui puisse donner forme à une société démocratique et techniquement avancée. Dix ans d'indépendance formelle et de division ont fait la preuve, si besoin était, de l'impuissance des micro-Nations ouest-africaines. Elles sont incapables de se mettre à l'abri des tentatives de recolonisation. Elles sont inaptes, en dépit de leur potentiel, à édifier des réalités conséquentes qui participent, au même titre que l'U.R.S.S., les États-Unis, l'Europe occidentale ou la Chine à l'équilibre du monde. Elles se condamnent à l'impuissance dans la défense et la préservation de leurs propres libertés, dans la définition de société et d'outils économiques modernes. L'ouvrage de P. Diagne est une réflexion qui veut porter sur l'action. En ce sens, il dresse un diagnostic avant d'être une ouverture sur l'avenir ouest-africain. Il décèle les mécanismes de domination du système économique impérial, mis en place et contrôlé, par les métropoles conquérantes de l'Europe industrielle. Ces mécanismes sont essentiels à comprendre. L'auteur analyse le processus de recolonisation qui caractérise la décennie dite des indépendances. Mais cet ouvrage reste surtout une approche du problème de l'intégration économique comme projet d'édification d'une civilisation qui serve les intérêts et la vision du monde des peuples ouest-africains, qui les légitime, dans leurs droits de participer à l'équilibre du monde.

Cette thèse expose un regard critique sur toutes les dimensions du processus d'intégration régionale en Afrique de l'Ouest. Nous remettons en cause les fondements théoriques et idéologiques du modèle d'intégration retenu. Les structures de l'Etat-nation ouest africain dont les nouveaux pays ont hérité de la colonisation sont en contradiction avec les objectifs d'intégration régionale. L'environnement national et régional est apparu très rapidement instable et hostile avec l'éclatement des conflits de tout genre. La crise de l'Etat ouest africain et la crise de développement sont devenues indissociables. Dans un système politique mal adapté et mal intégré, la prospérité de l'économie devient difficile. Ainsi, faute de pouvoir définir sa propre stratégie de développement économique, l'Afrique de l'Ouest s'est laissé diriger par les théories économiques conçues pour elle, d'où l'inadaptation de son schéma de libéralisation des échanges. En dépit des échecs répétés, on note une forme de résurgence du processus d'intégration régionale en Afrique de l'ouest. C'est le cas notamment avec les institutions de la CEDEAO et de l'UEMOA, qui, bien que se chevauchant parfois et alimentant des rivalités entre Anglophones et Francophones, persistent dans la voie de l'intégration régionale, conscientes de la réalité de la mondialisation et des défis auxquels elles sont confrontées.

What we see is the trivialization of research protocols which, consequently, are reduced to fantasy prescriptions that detach social studies from universal debates over the validity of science rather than an interrogation of research procedures induced by the complexity of social dynamics. As a result, social sciences have become an imitative discourse and a recital of exotic anecdotes without perspectives. Knowledge production therefore loses any heuristic bearing. It is on the basis of this reality that attempts to correct this tendency have been made in this book by discussing the methodological foundation of social science knowledge. This volume is a collection of papers presented during methodological workshops organized by CODESRIA. Its objective is to revitalize theory and methodology in field work in Africa while contributing to the creation of a critical space hinged upon the mastery of epistemological bases which are indispensable to any scientific imagination. Far from being a collection of technical certainties and certified methods, this book interrogates the uncertain itinerary of the process of social logics discovery. In that sense, it is a decisive step towards a critical systemization of ongoing theories and practices within the African scientific community. The reader can, therefore, identify the philosophical, historical, sociological and anthropological foundations of object construction, field data exploitation and research results delivery. This book explains the importance of the philosophical and social modalities of scientific practice, the influence of local historical contexts, the different usages of new investigative tools, including the audiovisual tools. Finally, the book, backed by classical theories, serves as an invitation toward considering scientific commitment to African field research from a reflective perspective.
