Book Language and Development in Africa

Download or read book Language and Development in Africa written by H. Ekkehard Wolff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-26 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development is based on communication through language. With more than two thousand languages being used in Africa, language becomes a highly relevant factor in all sectors of political, social, cultural and economic life. This important sociolinguistic dimension hitherto remains underrated and under-researched in 'Western' mainstream development studies. The book discusses the resourcefulness of languages, both local and global, in view of the ongoing transformation of African societies as much as for economic development. From a novel 'applied African sociolinguistics' perspective it analyses the continuing effects of linguistic imperialism on postcolonial African societies, in particular regarding the educational sector, through imposed hegemonic languages such as Arabic and the ex-colonial languages of European provenance. It offers a broad interdisciplinary scientific approach to the linguistic dimensions of sociocultural modernisation and economic development in Africa, written for both the non-linguistically trained reader as much as for the linguistically trained researcher and language practitioner.

Book Pedagogical Appropriation of Information and Communication Technologies ICT by West African Educators

Download or read book Pedagogical Appropriation of Information and Communication Technologies ICT by West African Educators written by Toure, Kathryn and published by Langaa RPCIG. This book was released on 2016-08-06 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: West African teachers and professors who are appropriating information and communication technologies (ICT) are making it part and parcel of education and everyday life. In Mali and beyond, they adapt ICT to their milieus and work as cultural agents, mediating between technology and society. They yearn to use ICT to make education more relevant to life, facilitate and enhance African participation in global debates and scholarly production, and evolve how Africa and Africans are projected and perceived. In sum, educators are harnessing ICT for its transformative possibilities. The changes apparent in student-teacher relations (more interactive) and classrooms (more dialogical) suggest that ICT can be a catalyst for pedagogical change, including in document-poor contexts and ones weighed down by legacies of colonialism. Learning from the perspectives and experiences of educators pioneering the use of ICT in education in Africa can inform educational theory, practice and policy and deepen understandings of the concept of appropriation as a process of cultural change.

Book excerpt: Ten years after the 1994 genocide—in which an estimated 10 percent of the country's population perished—Rwanda's devastated education system is now back on its feet. Classrooms have been repaired and new ones built; teachers who fled the mayhem have been reintegrated into the teaching force; arrears in teacher pay have been cleared up; a Genocide Fund has been created specifically to assist orphans; and, in higher education, the system has been diversified and new arrangements for student finance have been introduced. This success notwithstanding, the task of transforming the rapid recovery into sustained progress over time has only just begun.A priority will be to ensure that all Rwandan children can complete a full course of primary schooling of reasonable quality; and that expansion at the post-primary levels occurs at a pace commensurate with the labor market's capacity to absorb highly educated job seekers. Achieving this will present tough tradeoffs in financing and service delivery, including combining increased funding for primary education with greater reliance on private financing at other levels; sharper targeting of public subsidies for education; and tighter management of classroom processes to improve student flow and student learning throughout the system.'Education in Rwanda' explores the challenges of sustaining educational progress in a fiscally viable fashion as the country makes the transition from post-conflict recovery to long-term development.

Book Afrique part tous les matins

Download or read book Afrique part tous les matins written by Beat Sottas and published by Peter Lang Group Ag, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1995 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
