Book La Charte La loi 101 et les Qu b cois d expression anglaise The Charter Bill 101 and English Speaking Quebec

Download or read book La Charte La loi 101 et les Qu b cois d expression anglaise The Charter Bill 101 and English Speaking Quebec written by Lorraine O'Donnell and published by Presses de l'Université Laval. This book was released on 2021-06-22T00:00:00-04:00 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: La Charte. The Charter: Bill 101 and English-Speaking Quebec The Charter of the French Language, also called Bill 101, profoundly changed Quebec. The 1977 law made state institutions, certain workplaces, and commercial signs predominantly French. Since the law's adoption, the English-speaking minority has experienced population loss, economic decline, and school closures, but also a growing organizational vitality and increased participation in Francophone Quebec. This book features chapters in English or French by researchers and engaged citizens. They explore the Charter in relation to English-speaking Quebec and within a broad historical, political, legal, and socio-economic context. A complex view of the Quebec law and its communities emerges.

Book Youth Language and Identity

Download or read book Youth Language and Identity written by Diane Gérin-Lajoie and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a path-breaking examination of identity construction among minority-language youth. Based on a three-year study at two English-language high schools in the Montreal area, it builds on Diane Gérin-Lajoie's previous work on Francophone minority identity in Ontario and extends her analysis to Canada's other official language minority: anglophones living in Quebec. The book begins with an overview of the social and educational reality of Quebec's anglophone minority, and then presents the findings on students' language practices. The central chapters sketch identity portraits of the study's participants, and the later chapters pursue analyses of the themes raised by the study. The result is an original contribution to the understanding of language and identity that will be of interest to school administrators and teachers working in minority-language communities in Canada, and to scholars working on issues of minorities in the social sciences.

Download or read book Negotiating Identities written by Diane Gerin-Lajoie and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2016-04-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As members of an official linguistic minority in Canada, Anglophone teachers living and working in Quebec have a distinct experience of the relationship between language and identity. In Negotiating Identities, Diane Gérin-Lajoie uses a critical sociological framework to explore the life stories of Anglophone teachers and illustrate the social practices which connect them with their linguistic, cultural, and professional identities. Exploring the complexity of identity as a lived experience, Negotiating Identities demonstrates the strength of language as a political force in these educators’ lives both in the classroom and outside it. Through comparisons with the other official linguistic minority in Canada, the Francophones, and particularly with Franco-Ontarians, this book tells the stories of Quebec’s Anglophone teachers in their own words, providing a unique account of how these individuals make sense of their lives as residents of Quebec.

This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Learning Strategy Instruction in the Language Classroom

Download or read book Learning Strategy Instruction in the Language Classroom written by Anna Uhl Chamot and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2019-05-10 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive collection, comprising both theoretical and practical contributions, is unique in its focus on language learning strategy instruction (LLSI). The chapters, written by leading international experts, embrace both sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic perspectives. The issues presented include different models of strategy instruction and how they can be tailored according to context and the learners’ age and attainment level. The collection will be an important resource for researchers in the field, both for its critical perspectives and its guidance on collaborating with teachers to design interventions to implement strategy instruction. It also identifies key areas for research, including the teaching of less studied groups of strategies such as grammar and affective strategies. The book will prove equally valuable to language teachers through the provision of detailed teaching materials and tasks. Those engaged in professional development, whether pre- or in-service teacher education, will find a wealth of concrete ideas for sessions, courses and assignments.
