Book Descartes s Fictions

Download or read book Descartes s Fictions written by Emma Gilby and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Descartes's Fictions traces common movements in early modern philosophy and literary method. Emma Gilby reassesses the significance of Descartes's writing by bringing his philosophical output into contact with the literary treatises, exempla, and debates of his age. She argues that humanist theorizing about poetics represents a vital intellectual context for Descartes's work. She offers readings of the controversies to which this poetic theory gives rise, with particular reference to the genre of tragicomedy, questions of verisimilitude or plausibility, and the figures of Guez de Balzac and Pierre Corneille. Drawing on what Descartes says about, and to, his many contemporaries and correspondents embedded in the early modern republic of letters, this volume shows that poetics provides a repository of themes and images to which he returns repeatedly: fortune, method, error, providence, passion, and imagination, for instance. Like the poets and theorists of his age, Descartes is also drawn to the forms of attention that people may bring to his work. This interest finds expression in the mature Cartesian metaphysics of the Meditations, as well as, later, in the moral philosophy of his correspondence with Elisabeth of Bohemia or the Passions of the Soul. This volume thus bridges the gap between Cartesian criticism and late-humanist literary culture in France.

Book Postcolonialism and Migration in French Comics

Download or read book Postcolonialism and Migration in French Comics written by Mark McKinney and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Profound analysis of French comics through a postcolonial lens Postcolonialism and migration are major themes in contemporary French comics and have roots in the Algerian War (1954–62), antiracist struggle, and mass migration to France. This volume studies comics from the end of the formal dismantling of French colonial empire in 1962 up to the present. French cartoonists of ethnic-minority and immigrant heritage are a major focus, including Zeina Abirached (Lebanon), Yvan Alagbé (Benin), Baru (Italy), Enki Bilal (former Yugoslavia), Farid Boudjellal (Algeria and Armenia), José Jover (Spain), Larbi Mechkour (Algeria), and Roland Monpierre (Guadeloupe). The author analyzes comics representing a gamut of perspectives on immigration and postcolonial ethnic minorities, ranging from staunch defense to violent rejection. Individual chapters are dedicated to specific artists, artistic collectives, comics, or themes, including avant-gardism, undocumented migrants in comics, and racism in far-right comics.

The author whose own bones are a little creaky these days, came across a story about a 102 year old artist in the glory of her first success at the Whitney Museum in New York. This set Reid off reading neuroscience reports about how creativity helps people live longer and stay in better health. The author, who has spent her whole life making art twelve hours a day and exhibiting in museums around the world, was overjoyed to learn how and why her favorite activity is such a super remedy for aging well. She found that anything creative, dancing or singing, drawing or even beginning a new language, will keep you healthier and lengthen your life. You will probably also make new friends. After 50 is maybe the best time of your life for creating something new, because the wisdom and experience you've gained over the years make you much more innovative. As you age you're freer and you have only your own pleasure to think of. The brain changes with time and you tend to be braver too, and more likely to produce something that is completely unexpected. One reason is that you worry less about what the world thinks. You gain a certain peacefulness. This creates fertile ground for your imagination to flourish as you get older. The increase of self-esteem these activities bring is nourishing to the soul and to the body. Isn't it wonderful to find some good news in the world today.?
