Book excerpt: By the time Georg Baselitz (b. 1938) came to artistic maturity in Germany in the mid-1960s, he had renounced the gestural abstraction prevalent in Europe and America and developed a new aesthetic based upon the figure and its representation as an abstract image. His bold canvases - which began to feature his signature upside-down figures later in the decade - have brought him international recognition, but only now is his important career the subject of a comprehensive survey, organized by the Guggenheim Museum and traveling to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; and the Nationalgalerie, Berlin. This monograph, by Guggenheim Deputy Director and Senior Curator Diane Waldman, documents every phase of the artist's career as a painter and sculptor. New translations of many of Baselitz's writings provide additional insight into his radical use of the figure in painting. A chronology, bibliography, and exhibition history are also included.

Book excerpt: The First Book With All of George Baselitz's Sculptures Georg Baselitz, born Hans-Georg Kern in Deutschbaselitz, Saxony, in 1939, continuously contravenes set categories and regularities in his work. The manifold meanings of his works, the allusions and pictorial references to art history, contemporary history and biography, the ironic distance and the eagerness to experiment emphasize how he ceaselessly rethinks and reinvents his painting. In sculpture, in which Baselitz first began to work in 1979, he fights against harmony and symmetry just as he does in his paintings. Much like the painter Baselitz accords the greatest possible freedom to the individual brushstrokes in his paintings, the sculptor Baselitz works the wood with a chain saw, hatchet and chisel. The raw feats of strength create abrupt lines, notches and incisions in the sculpture. Sculpture, the artist has said, is a shorter path than painting to express the same problem, since sculpture is more primitive, more brutal and more unconditional. The lively evocative power of the creative means is much more directly legible and much less encoded in the medium of sculpture. This volume is a catalogue raisonne documenting all fifty eight scupltures created over the past thirty years, from his first sculpture "Model for a Sculpture"(1979-1980) to his most recent, "Folk Thing Zero"(2009).

Book Tribal Art Traffic

Download or read book Tribal Art Traffic written by Raymond Corbey and published by Kit Pub. This book was released on 2000 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication traces the movements of hundreds of thousands of masks, statues, amulets, shields etc. from overseas tribul cultures to and within North Atlantic societies, in colonial and post-colonial times. While the focus is on the Low Countries and their overseas territories, the Belgian Congo and the Netherlands East Indies, related developments in three adjacent colonial powers, Germany, France and the United Kingdom, are also covered, as are links to the United States. The milieus and locales through which tribal objects circulated and circulate are charted, like colonial trading posts, auction houses and museums, and dealers, collectors and curators relate their more recent experiences with objects-in-motion.

Book Picasso s Collection of African Oceanic Art

Download or read book Picasso s Collection of African Oceanic Art written by Peter Stepan and published by Prestel Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although he never set foot in Africa, Picasso had a passion for African art. Throughout the course of his life, he assembled a unique collection of statues and masks. Comprising more than 120 objects, Picasso's private collection can now be found in museums in Paris such as the Louvre, Musee Quai Branly and the Musee Picasso, as well as in the private collections of members of Picasso's family. This beautiful book documents the entire collection and examines it as a whole. It features documentary photographs, a section of stunning colour plates, and detailed ethnographic descriptions of each piece, providing a full account of Picasso's relationship with African and Oceanic art. This important publication sheds new light on the fascination non-Western art held for one of twentieth century's most important artists. Review: '...an illuminating and handsome book, copiously illustrated with fascinating original documents and excellent colour reproductions...''... a convenient and also essential reference tool for anyone interested in this important subject.''... an invaluable and also entertaining guide.''... this book not only investigates Picasso's response to tribal art with unusual thoroughness, but also reopens the larger question of the artist's 'primitivism'.'The Burlington Magazine, June 2007

Download or read book The Arts of Africa at the Dallas Museum of Art written by Dallas Museum of Art and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated book showcases 110 objects from the Dallas Museum of Art's world-renowned African collection. In contrast to Western "art for art's sake," tradition-based African art served as an agent of religion, social stability, or social control. Chosen both for their visual appeal and their compelling histories and cultural significance, the works of art are presented under the themes of leadership and status; the cycle of life; decorative arts; and influences (imported and exported). Also included are many fascinating photographs that show the context in which these objects were originally used. Distributed for the Dallas Museum of Art
