En vérité, sa théorie du langage ne peut se comprendre, en sa signification profonde et en sa visée essentielle, à partir des seuls écrits strictement linguistiques plus tardifs (après 1820), mais requiert la mise à jour, objet de la présente étude, de la fondation philosophique sur laquelle elle repose toute entière. Celle-ci a été construite dans la décennie 1790-1800 sur fond d'une méditation approfondie et renouvellée du kantisme puis, sur cette base théorique, à travers l'exploration méthodique, constamment appuyée sur un savoir positif considérable, de divers domaines de la connaissance et del'activité humaines. Compris comme autant d'essais pour élucider, grâce à la coopération de la spéculation et de l'empirie, la question: Qu'est-ce que l'homme?, reconnnue comme la question fondamentale de la philosophie, les écrits apparemment hétérogènes de cette période décisive révèlent alors une réelle unité. Cette pensée, ainsi dévoilée, se montre comme une tentative très originale, sans doute en son temps inactuelle, pour frayer, à partir du criticisme décelé comme le début de la modernité, une voie tout à fait autre que celle qui, de Fichte à Hegel, s'est imposée à la postérité, celle d'une anthropologie philosophique, qui effectue la transformation de la philosophie transcendantale en une philosophie de l'homme. Celle-ci, élaborée très tôt, au tournant de deux siècles, contient la clé de l'intelligibilité de ce qu'on appelle la "philosophie du langage" de Humboldt, laquelle n'est est, de fait, que l'ultime figure, celle qui achève cette transformation en découvrant le langage comme la médiation dernière entre l'homme et le monde. Dans cette optique, cette pensée authentiquement philosophique peut être appréciée comme l'origine d'une interprétation de l'univers humain qui ne trouvera sa reprise qu'en notre siècle.

On ignore généralement que la détermination du sens de son entreprise est bien antérieure, avant même qu'il ne découvre le problèm du langage. Ces deux écrits, inachevés, restés à l'état de brouillons et publiés seulement au début de ce siècle, peuvent être datés de 1796 et 1797. Ils sont intéressants à bien des égards. Ils constituent l'achèvement d'une réflexion menée depuis 1790, sur fond d'une assimulation du criticisme, dans plusieurs champs du savoir et d'importantes dimensions de l'expérience humaine (politique, histoire, esthétique, etc.). Ils se donnent comme un effort, mené d'une manière certes encore spéculative, pour thématiser ce qui apparaît à Humboldt comme l'exigence de l'époque, savoir ce qu'il en est de l'homme, et cerner les contours d'une anthropologie philosophique d'un type nouveau. Mais, s'ils condensent le passé d'une pensée, ces textes valent aussi comme première formulation relativement claire de ce qui s'accomplira bien plus tard sous les traits d'une philosophie du langage. In Volume IV: Nineteenth Century Linguistics, Anna Morpurgo Davies shows how linguistics came into its own as an independent discipline separated from philosophical and literary studies and enjoyed a unique intellectual and institutional success tied to the research ethos of the new universities, until it became a model for other humanistic subjects which aimed at 'scientific status'. The linguistics of the nineteenth century abandons earlier theoretical discussions in favour of a more empirical and historical approach using new methods to compare languages and to investigate their history. The great achievement of this period is the demonstration that languages such as Sanskrit , Latin and English are related and derive from a parent language which is not attested but can be reconstructed. This book discusses in detail the theories developed and the individual findings obtained. In contrast with earlier historiographical trends it denies that the new approach originated entirely from German Romanticism, and highlights a form of continuity with the eighteenth century, while stressing that a deliberate break took place round the 1830s. By the end of the century the results of comparative and historical linguistics had been generally accepted, but it soon became clear that a historical approach could not by itself solve all questions that it raised. At this point the new interest in description and theory which characterizes the twentieth century began to gain prominence.
