Quand la place ne manque pas, ceux-ci offrent leur ombre, une protection des sols et de nombreux produits. Le plus représentatif des systèmes traditionnels est le système dit du " parc " où les arbres, karités, nérés, etc., sont dispersés au-dessus des cultures de céréales. Les systèmes anciens ont su exploiter l'importante variété des arbres pour mettre en valeur la diversité des sols (on trouve par exemple les arbres exigeants sur les sols profonds et les arbres frugaux sur sols minces). Confrontées à une forte croissance démographique, les sociétés sahéliennes doivent accroître leur production. L'intensification agricole, qui passe par un raccourcissement des temps de jachère, l'introduction de la charrue et une concurrence accrue vis-à-vis des cultures, conduit à la disparition progressive des arbres et à une dégradation des sols et une perte de ressources. Pour permettre aux pratiques agricoles de s'adapter aux conditions actuelles, il importe de mieux connaître les arbres du Sahel : qui sont-ils, quels sont leurs produits, leurs effets sur l'écosystème et leurs rôles sociaux ? L'arbre n'est pas la panacée qui résoudra tous les problèmes mais c'est une ressource importante. C'est aussi un témoin de l'histoire des paysages et c'est dans les leçons de cette histoire que l'on peut trouver de nouveaux scénarios de développement. Cet ouvrage d'agroforesterie, discipline scientifique nouvelle qui veut concilier savoirs agronomiques et forestiers, longtemps contradictoires, propose une approche originale, systémique et globale, des plantes, des champs et des terroirs. Après une réflexion de fond sur l'arbre et sa place dans les systèmes agricoles sahéliens, l'auteur s'attache à nous faire mieux connaître les principales espèces rencontrées. La majorité des exemples provient de son expérience au Burkina Faso, mais des exemples sont également pris au Sénégal, au Mali, en Côte-d'Ivoire...

It also presents data on current trends in parkland development and assesses determining factors. It goes on to examine the strength and limitations of institutional arrangements as well as the constraints imposed by Sahelian forest policies on the sustainable management of parklands. The production, use and marketing of parkland products is reviewed with an emphasis on their contribution to food security, local and national income as well as social values. Overall costs and benefits of the practice of parkland agroforestry are evaluated. In conclusion, the document identifies crucial research needs and promising avenues for promoting sustainable management of parkland systems.
