Le principal instrument de ces investigations a été un questionnaire administré dans le cadre scolaire à des jeunes des deux sexes, d’extraction sociale variée, dont l’âge s’échelonne de quatorze à dix-sept ans. L’éventail scolaire s’étend des collèges d’enseignement technique aux classes terminales de lycées, en passant par les collèges d’enseignement secondaire. L’échantillonnage comporte également un groupe d’apprentis d’une grande administration privée, qui ont abandonné leurs études à l’âge de quatorze-quinze ans. « Il faudrait écrire un livre avec des passages de devoirs d’élèves et le faire lire à tous les parents. Je crois qu’ils comprendraient alors notre cas, bien que ce soit difficile pour eux. » Ce livre qui donne la parole à plus de 1 300 adolescents répond à ce souhait de l’un d’eux et jette un éclairage singulier sur les hésitations et les perplexités de cette période où déferlent et s’entrecroisent tendances, appétits, sentiments qui remettent en question les conduites, les croyances et les attachements antérieurs. Cet ouvrage s’inscrit dans la ligne des nombreux travaux que le Docteur Jacques Burstin, avec un remarquable sens de l’analyse, a consacrés à l’adolescence et à ses problèmes : la difficile et vitale insertion des adolescents dans le monde des adultes.

The small French town of Ainay-le-Ch�teau and its environs are the site of a "family colony" for men, established in 1900. Here the patients ("lodgers") live with ordinary families ("foster parents"), hold jobs, and are free to move about the countryside. Jodelet's chronicle of daily life in the colony is made rich and vivid by extensive ethnographic material as she unravels a complex set of relationships, ultimately finding that while some of the barriers between the "other" and the larger society have been overcome, new ones have arisen in their place. This unique social experiment provides invaluable social and cultural insights, illuminating many fundamental issues in psychology, psychiatry, and sociology.
