  • Author : Stacy Alaimo
  • Publisher : U of Minnesota Press
  • Release : 2016-10-15
  • ISBN : 1452952183
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Exposed written by Stacy Alaimo and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2016-10-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opening with the statement “The anthropocene is no time to set things straight,” Stacy Alaimo puts forth potent arguments for a material feminist posthumanism in the chapters that follow. From trans-species art and queer animals to naked protesting and scientific accounts of fishy humans, Exposed argues for feminist posthumanism immersed in strange agencies and scale-shifting ethics. Including such divergent topics as landscape art, ocean ecologies, and plastic activism, Alaimo explores our environmental predicaments to better understand feminist occupations of transcorporeal subjectivity. She puts scientists, activists, artists, writers, and theorists in conversation, revealing that the state of the planet in the twenty-first century has radically transformed ethics, politics, and what it means to be human. Ultimately, Exposed calls for an environmental stance in which, rather than operating from an externalized perspective, we think, feel, and act as the very stuff of the world.

Book Children Exposed To Violence

Download or read book Children Exposed To Violence written by Robert Geffner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-25 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children’s exposure to violence (CEV) in their home, their community, and our society has finally been recognized as a serious mental health, social, and public health problem. This book highlights a summary of relevant current research, practice, and policy issues. It is the third in a series to help provide current state-of-the-science information to stimulate awareness, research, and best practices in the field. This book provides chapters concerning the physiological effects of violence on children, its effects on behavioral and emotional functioning, and differences between boys and girls. Current interventions for children and families, such as innovative programs that are both home based as well as community based, are described. Promising and evidence-based practices are presented to provide the most recent approaches to helping children recover from the trauma of the abuse. The chapters in this book provide greater awareness of the issues involved with CEV, stimulate additional research, improve practice techniques, lead to more evidence-based programs for both intervention as well as prevention, and help initiate a national priority to eliminate violence in the home and community. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Emotional Abuse.

Book Journeys Exposed

Download or read book Journeys Exposed written by Giorgia Alù and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journeys Exposed: Women's Writing, Photography, and Mobility examines contemporary literature written by women that are all in different ways related to Italy. It argues that photography provides women with a means to expose aspects of their nomadic self and of the others’ mobile lives within and beyond the writing process. By resorting to the visual, women individualistically respond to forms of hegemonic power, fragmentation, displacement, loss and marginality, and make these experiences key to their creative production.

Book Exposed

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bernard E. Harcourt
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2015-11-17
  • ISBN : 0674915097
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book Exposed written by Bernard E. Harcourt and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social media compile data on users, retailers mine information on consumers, Internet giants create dossiers of who we know and what we do, and intelligence agencies collect all this plus billions of communications daily. Exploiting our boundless desire to access everything all the time, digital technology is breaking down whatever boundaries still exist between the state, the market, and the private realm. Exposed offers a powerful critique of our new virtual transparence, revealing just how unfree we are becoming and how little we seem to care. Bernard Harcourt guides us through our new digital landscape, one that makes it so easy for others to monitor, profile, and shape our every desire. We are building what he calls the expository society—a platform for unprecedented levels of exhibition, watching, and influence that is reconfiguring our political relations and reshaping our notions of what it means to be an individual. We are not scandalized by this. To the contrary: we crave exposure and knowingly surrender our privacy and anonymity in order to tap into social networks and consumer convenience—or we give in ambivalently, despite our reservations. But we have arrived at a moment of reckoning. If we do not wish to be trapped in a steel mesh of wireless digits, we have a responsibility to do whatever we can to resist. Disobedience to a regime that relies on massive data mining can take many forms, from aggressively encrypting personal information to leaking government secrets, but all will require conviction and courage.
