Book Kyoto Woodcuts

Book excerpt: Kyoto has many faces. Japan's imperial capital until 1868, its name even now is synonymous with that country's art and civilization. Besides being a gigantic open-air museum of art and architecture, it is also a place of pilgrimage for religious contemplation, a treasure house of Japanese antiques and traditional arts and crafts, a modern center of commerce and communications, and above all a lively place to live for its million and a half residents. Kyoto Woodcuts presents all these aspects, interpreted by one of the city's most gifted daughters. -- Provided by publisher.

Book Historical Dictionary of Osaka and Kyoto

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Osaka and Kyoto written by Ian Martin Röpke and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osaka and Kyoto are often overshadowed in the Western imagination by Tokyo's teeming sea of civilization. Nevertheless, Osaka and Kyoto are the setting for most of Japan's important historical events. From the 5th century B.C.E. to the 17th century, the Osaka-Kyoto region (known as the Kansai today) was the center of Japan politically, culturally, and economically. Today, the region continues to play a leading role in the traditional arts as well as serving as the second most important economic area in the country. This volume begins to address a painful lack of information about Osaka and Kyoto in English. Its dictionary-style entries place concise and important information at researchers' and scholars' fingertips. The introductions and chronologies contribute to the usefulness of this ready-reference, and the bibliography points students of Osaka and Kyoto to starting points for further research.

Book Modern Japanese Prints Statler

Download or read book Modern Japanese Prints Statler written by Oliver Statler and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring over 100 unique prints, Modern Japanese Prints is a testament to the continuity of Japanese art and creativity. By far the most vitally creative group of artists working in Japan today, modern print-makers are truly international in appeal. Although they owe much of their heritage to the famous ukiyoe techniques of the past, they depart from their forebears in at least two important respects. In the first place, whereas in the ancient ukiyoe tradition a print was the joint production of three men— the artist-designer, the artisan who carved the blocks, and the printer—these modern artists perform all these functions themselves, thus satisfying their demands for individual artistic expression at every step of the creative process. Another distinguishing feature of this artistic school is that its inspiration is derived neither solely from its own Japanese past nor solely from the West. This book carefully traces the history of the modern print movement through detailed discussions of the life and work of twenty-nine of its most noteworthy and representative artists. It describes vicissitudes which the movement has undergone and the high artistic ideals which have motivated its members in spite of public apathy and the hostility of the traditionalists.
