Interkulturelle Kontakte sind an der Tagesordnung. Es gibt kaum ein Unternehmen, das nicht exportiert oder importiert, viele Unternehmen haben global verteilte Tochterunternehmen, Joint-Ventures oder sonstige Kooperationen. Daher werden immer mehr Menschen im Berufs- und Privatleben mit der interkulturellen Kommunikation konfrontiert. Die folgende Seminararbeit, soll einen Einblick über die unterschiedliche Kultur zwischen China und Deutschland geben. Insbesondere werden die Kulturunterschiede, die in verschiedenen Studien theoretische beschrieben sind, mit meinen Erfahrungen aus dem Alltag und Berufsleben verglichen. Meine Erfahrungen stammen aus der mittlerweile einjährigen Berufstätigkeit in der Volksrepublik China, wo ich für das Unternehmen Bosch in Changsha arbeite und lebe. Der Bericht soll einen praxisnahen Überblick, über die Unterschiede der Kultur und der Interkulturellen Kommunikation geben. Wobei zu beachten ist, dass die genannten Beispiele und Erfahrungen sich aus subjektiver Sicht auf das allgemeine Verhalten der Chinesen beziehen, und es sicherlich Ausnahmen gibt die dem widersprechen. In Kapitel 2 werden zunächst die theoretischen Grundlagen und Modelle erklärt, die in der Literatur zu den Themen Kulturunterschied und Interkulturelle Kommunikation vorhanden sind. Kapitel 3 beschäftigt sich mit der Charakterisierung der Chinesischen Kultur, bezogen auf die Interkulturelle Kommunikation mit Europäern. Dabei werden die theoretischen Modelle und Aussagen mit meinen Erfahrungen aus der Praxis verglichen.

International tätige Unternehmen, die ihre Produkte im Ausland absetzen wollen, müssen bereit sein, sich mit den kulturellen Besonderheiten ihrer Geschäftspartner und Kunden auseinanderzusetzen, denn allen Verwestlichungstendenzen zum Trotz unterscheiden sich die einzelnen Landeskulturen stark voneinander. China, einer der größten Profiteure der Globalisierung und anhaltender Exportweltmeister seit 2009, spielt für wirtschaftliche Überlegungen deutscher Unternehmen eine große Rolle, denn die bilateralen Beziehungen haben sich in den vergangenen 40 Jahren zu beachtlicher Dichte entwickelt. So ist China Deutschlands wichtigster Wirtschaftspartner in Asien, während Deutschland Chinas wichtigster Handelspartner in Europa ist. Neben reinen Sprachbarrieren gibt es jedoch weitere Stolpersteine, die in der Zusammenarbeit zu Missverständnissen führen können, haben Chinesen und Deutsche für identische Probleme doch unterschiedliche Lösungsstrategien entwickelt, die in ihren spezifischen Kulturstandards bzw. ihrer jeweiligen „kulturellen Programmierung“ begründet sind. Diese Eigenarten sind häufig durch religiöse, philosophische und soziale Traditionen über lange Zeit – im Falle Chinas sogar über Jahrtausende hinweg – gewachsen. Sie sind hauptsächlich unsichtbar und treten nur im Kontakt mit einer anderen Kultur zu Tage. Solide Kenntnisse über die eigene bzw. die fremde Kultur sowie über die Frage, inwieweit sie sich voneinander unterscheiden, gewinnen damit zunehmend an Bedeutung, damit Empathie und Verständnis für einander wachsen können.

In particular, multinational corporations (MNCs) face the challenge of managing their globally dispersed work force effectively. Yet, the field of international human resource management (IHRM) remains an understudied domain, lacking substantial empirical and conceptual research. Also, a prevailing focus on quantitative data suggests a need for deeper qualitative investigations, which allows a more profound assessment of the context in which IHRM unfolds. By addressing IHRM at MNCs, the current empirical work contributes additional scientific insights into this domain. In this respect, the author has selected an approach of inductive comparative case study research, mainly based on qualitative data, that enables the generation of theory through an iterative, data-driven process. This method has been applied to investigate IHRM because it is particularly fruitful when examining new and narrowly developed scientific fields as well as considering contextual conditions. Thus, a multiple case study was conducted through exploratory and semi-structured interviews with managerial employees at six western MNCs which maintain their regional headquarters for South-East Asia in Singapore. The initial guiding objective was to provide a more thorough understanding of the forces that influence IHRM. Due to the exploratory nature of the research set-up, this broad focus has narrowed during the conduct of the study and the subsequent data analysis. Based on the interviews, employee turnover emerged as a key concern for international organizations operating in Singapore. Although a tight local labour market has led to the effect that job turnover is a widespread phenomenon, there is a lack of research addressing this issue and the resulting implications for foreign MNCs. The present study s focus on employee turnover also takes into account the growing importance of local staff for MNCs. Indeed, by acknowledging the critical role that local nationals play at the host country level, it will be increasingly imperative for international organizations to establish effective retention strategies.
