Download or read book Teaching Children to Read written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Education and Skills Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2005 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to read is the key to educational achievement, and poor literacy skills will limit a person's opportunities throughout life. The Committee's inquiry examines current practice in schools used to teach children to read, in order to consider which method works best based on available evidence. Recognition is given that the subject is a complex one and is also influenced by a range of factors outside a school's control. Issues discussed include the impact of the National Literacy Strategy (NLS); literacy teaching methods including the phonics method, which focuses on sound-letter correspondence; the need to promote reading for pleasure; research evidence findings; barriers to reading acquisition; learning difficulties and disabilities. Current statistics indicate that around 20 per cent of children aged 11 years still underachieve in reading and writing skills for their age level. The Committee's recommendations include the need for a review of the NLS prescribed methodology for the teaching of reading in primary schools, and that further large-scale comparative research should be commissioned by the DfES to determine which methods are most effective.

Book excerpt: Learning From Children Who Read at an Early Age is the result of a three-year research project in which the authors studied a group of children who learnt to read without being taught, from before they started school until the end of Year 2 when they were given their first National Curriculum assessments. Using this study as a framework for examining how children make progress over their time in Key Stage 1 across a range of literacy skills, the authors suggest guidelines which teachers can use to help all children progress with reading.

Book excerpt: This textbook will prove invaluable to teacher educators, teachers, educational psychologists, and any professional who is involved with teaching children to read. It provides a detailed examination of the processes that are involved in achieving fluent word reading skills and ability to comprehend written texts. Understanding these processes and their development empowers teachers to select appropriate, evidence-based teaching strategies and thus teach children more effectively. The book is in four parts: Part 1 provides the reader with a Tutorial Review covering essential knowledge about language, and presenting the two dimensions of the Simple View of Reading. Part 2 concentrates on the word reading dimension, with chapters on processes in skilled word reading, the development of these processes, and practical advice on research validated teaching methods to develop children’s word reading skills. Part 3 turns to the language comprehension dimension, with chapters on the comprehension of oral and written language, and on teaching reading comprehension. Part 4 introduces the reader to assessment practices and methods of identifying children with difficulties in either or both dimensions of the Simple View, and considers children with word reading difficulties and children with specific comprehension difficulties, describing effective evidence-based interventions for each type of difficulty.

Download or read book Beyond Early Reading written by David Waugh and published by Critical Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-17 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an essential text for primary trainees and teachers. While the focus in early reading is on systematic synthetic phonics, it is important to see the bigger picture and understand that teaching reading is a continuum that involves more much than the mechanics of reading. The book focuses on a range of issues to develop children who can read into children who do read, including extending reading with proficient readers, engaging disengaged readers, sustaining interest in reading in the transition from primary to secondary, and the importance of oracy in reading. Additionally, there is an exploration of the wider context of reading including international perspectives, new literacies and the importance of reading to personal development. Case studies and activities demonstrate practical applications with clear links to the underpinning theory, while critical reflections challenge the reader and encourage deeper thought about the chapter content.
Download or read book Emerging Literacy Unlocking Instruction for Every Child written by James McTaggart and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-25 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being able to read and write with ease does not just open up imagination and learning, it also helps us to thrive and cope in a world increasingly based on complex information from coding to utility bills. Everyone wants children to make the best start with literacy, but despite the existence of evidence-based programmes of instruction, some do not respond as hoped at first, or show a fade in learning in later school years. This book is about why that happens, and what we can do about it. Drawing on research and the wide expertise of its authors, it sets out how lifelong literacy is based on crucial aspects of early child development and how these can be assessed and improved in classrooms. The book focuses on five core emerging literacy skills that underpin successful learning for children: concepts of print; phonological awareness; oral language; working memory and executive function; and pencil control. Educators who use this book and reflect on and adapt its ideas, will be more confident in what they are doing, with an enriched understanding of why it fits the children they are educating. It will be crucial reading for early years educators, primary classroom practitioners, educational psychologists, and speech and language therapists.
