Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'To all intents and purposes I am as sexless as a block of wood. To eat is the extreme fundamental of living.' - South African POW, 1942 Books on World War II abound, yet there are remarkably few publications on South Africa's role in this war, which had such an influence on how we live today. There is even less written about those who participated on the margins of the war, especially those who were physically removed from the battlefields through capture by enemy forces. South Africa's prisoners of war during World War II, their experiences and recollections, are largely forgotten. That is until now. Historian Karen Horn painstakingly tracked down a number of former POWs. Together with written memoirs and archival documents, their interviews reveal rich narratives of hardship, endurance, humour, longing and self-discovery. Instead of fighting, these men adapted to another war, one which was fought on the inside of many prison camps. It was a war against hunger and deprivation, at times against ever-encroaching despondency and low morale amongst their companions in captivity. In their interviews, all the POWs expressed surprise at being asked to share their experiences of almost 70 years earlier. The author found it astonishing that almost all of them claimed not to be heroes of any kind. Perhaps this is not surprising when one considers that they returned home in 1945 to a country which soon afterwards tried its utmost to promote national amnesia with regard to its participation in the war. With great insight and empathy, Karen Horn shines a light on a neglected corner of South African history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses tourism development in Namibia. It consists of 12 major chapters. Chapter 2 explores the opportunities and challenges of implementing a national tourism policy in Namibia, as perceived by tourism entrepreneurs. Chapter 3 presents the South African experiences for local economic development (LED) in rural route tourism, also a potentially strategic tool for development through tourism in the rest of Southern Africa. Chapter 4 discusses the modernization approach to tourism development, both in theory and practice. Chapter 5 discusses their commoditization in the Namibian tourism promotion, thereby defining their symbolic role in Namibian tourism development policies. Chapter 6 evaluates the applicability of the strategic objectives and government policy in regard to community-based catering services among the Hananwa. Chapter 7 analyses the effectiveness of tourism development in the simultaneous achievement of successful nature conservation and better means of subsistence in the Okavango Delta. Chapter 8 analyses the resources and restraints of coastal bird tourism in Namibia. Chapter 9 explores the awareness and responses of the Southern African tourism sector to control HIV/AIDS, and the perceptions on the effects of the disease on its operational environment. The process of mutual learning is, however, a complicated one and has a number of critical points, as described in Chapter 10. Chapter 11 elaborates on the applicability of information and communication technology (ICT) for school-based tourism marketing in Namibia, based on experiences and studies in his former home region, the eastern Caprivi Strip. Chapter 12 discuss the possibilities for communities in or close to the park to benefit from its existence, focusing on the partnerships between the Makuleke community, the park's management and the private sector, and on a comparative situation on the Mozambican side in the former Coutada Sixteen National Park. Chapter 13 discusses some of the lessons learned from the Southern African case studies are brought together to outline the current issues of strategic tourism development, in terms of both academic research and applied work in the tourism sector.

Book The Anglo Boer War 1899 1902 963 Days

Download or read book The Anglo Boer War 1899 1902 963 Days written by Pieter G Cloete and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the start of the Anglo-Boer War today 120 years ago thousands of publications, written or typed reports and other creations have been produced to narrate the war events, express opinions on its origins, causes, course, results and legacy and on participants in the struggle. This process is ongoing, since the debate amongst both professional historians and interested amateurs on exactly what happened and why is still raging and new information on the war still crops up. The history of the Anglo-Boer War is truly a neverending discourse. As the author of a number of books on the war, I have consulted hundreds of both published and unpublished sources. Some were of limited value, but a small percentage of the published books were of such high value that they formed part of a small stack of books that found a permanent home on my desktop while I was in the writing process. Pieter Cloete’s The Anglo-Boer War – A Chronology, both the original English version and the enlarged Afrikaans version published in 2010, was always part of that stack. It is to me a privilege to write a foreword for the user-friendly and meticulously researched book. It not only contains a wealth of information but a detailed source list and an extensive index. There are few, if any, more helpful reference books on the war and thus represents an essential resource to anyone with a more than superficial interest in the Anglo-Boer War. DR JACKIE GROBLER Historian and author Recently retired after 40 years at the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies, The University of Pretoria.
