Book excerpt: Krokodil is the street name for the drug desomorphine, an opioid that emerged from Siberia as an extremely powerful pain killer now mostly used as a recreational drug. It produces a short but extremely intense 'high, ' said to be many times that of heroin. However, that 'high' comes at a very heavy price because the caustic nature of the drug aggressively destroys a user's bone and tissue from the inside out. Even knowing that, users flock to the drug willing to accept intense self-destruction for the drug's all-important, very addictive 'high.' But Barkley 'Bar' Cassidy, investigator for a criminal defense law firm, hears a rumor that a brilliant young chemist has discovered a way to eliminate all of the negative aspects of the drug without compromising its 'high, ' making Krokodil actually safe to use. Bar's problem is that all of the most notorious drug cartels along with an undercover government agency are trying to get their hands on the formula first. And they'll stop at nothing to get it.

Book Graphic Satire in the Soviet Union

Download or read book Graphic Satire in the Soviet Union written by John Etty and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the death of Joseph Stalin, Soviet-era Russia experienced a flourishing artistic movement due to relaxed censorship and new economic growth. In this new atmosphere of freedom, Russia’s satirical magazine Krokodil (The Crocodile) became rejuvenated. John Etty explores Soviet graphic satire through Krokodil and its political cartoons. He investigates the forms, production, consumption, and functions of Krokodil, focusing on the period from 1954 to 1964. Krokodil remained the longest-serving and most important satirical journal in the Soviet Union, unique in producing state-sanctioned graphic satirical comment on Soviet and international affairs for over seventy years. Etty’s analysis of Krokodil extends and enhances our understanding of Soviet graphic satire beyond state-sponsored propaganda. For most of its life, Krokodil consisted of a sixteen-page satirical magazine comprising a range of cartoons, photographs, and verbal texts. Authored by professional and nonprofessional contributors and published by Pravda in Moscow, it produced state-sanctioned satirical comment on Soviet and international affairs from 1922 onward. Soviet citizens and scholars of the USSR recognized Krokodil as the most significant, influential source of Soviet graphic satire. Indeed, the magazine enjoyed an international reputation, and many Americans and Western Europeans, regardless of political affiliation, found the images pointed and witty. Astoundingly, the magazine outlived the USSR but until now has received little scholarly attention.

Download or read book The Fate of the New Man written by Claire McCallum and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1945 and 1965, the catastrophe of war—and the social and political changes it brought in its wake—had a major impact on the construction of the Soviet masculine ideal. Drawing upon a wide range of visual material, The Fate of the New Man traces the dramatic changes in the representation of the Soviet man in the postwar period. It focuses on the two identities that came to dominate such depictions in the two decades after the end of the war: the Soviet man's previous role as a soldier and his new role in the home once the war was over. In this compelling study, Claire McCallum focuses on the reconceptualization of military heroism after the war, the representation of contentious subjects such as the war-damaged body and bereavement, and postwar changes to the depiction of the Soviet man as father. McCallum shows that it was the Second World War, rather than the process of de-Stalinization, that had the greatest impact on the masculine ideal, proving that even under the constraints of Socialist Realism, the physical and emotional devastation caused by the war was too great to go unacknowledged. The Fate of the New Man makes an important contribution to Soviet masculinity studies. McCallum's research also contributes to broader debates surrounding the impact of Stalin's death on Soviet society and on the nature of the subsequent Thaw, as well as to those concerning the relationship between Soviet culture and the realities of Soviet life. This fascinating study will appeal to scholars and students of Soviet history, masculinity studies, and visual culture studies.

Book excerpt: On an ordinary summer day, chaos erupts across the globe when thousands of cars simultaneously speed out of control in the United States and Europe. The death toll is enormous, and there is only one thing connecting the crashes—every single car is the same model. Amidst the bewilderment of the tragedy, ICE Special Agent Dominic Verrazzano is called to the Brooklyn Detention Center, where Tom Frisch, recently arrested for attempting to assassinate a U.N. President, claims to have knowledge about the mastermind behind the crashes. This is just the tip of the iceberg, and an even bigger catastrophe, involving many more motor companies, is already in the works. Verrazzano has no choice but to take Frisch with him as he tracks down an enemy that both men know far too well—their old Special Forces commander and father figure. Following leads that take them from New York to Detroit and on to Europe, Verrazzano finally lands in a confrontation that unravels a secret even more sinister than he could have expected. Relentless and enthralling, Matt Rees's second Dominic Verrazzano thriller China Strike takes readers on a high-speed pursuit that spans countries and oceans.

Incorporating many illustrations, the book covers a wide range of subjects, including the representations of heroes, the construction of myths, and the relationship between visual art forms and Soviet/Russian culture and society.

Book Devastation and Laughter

    Book Details:
  • Author : Annie Gérin
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2018-01-01
  • ISBN : 1487502435
  • Pages : 282 pages

Download or read book Devastation and Laughter written by Annie Gérin and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Devastation and Laughter, Annie G?rin explores the use of satire in the visual arts, the circus, theatre, and cinema under Lenin and Stalin. G?rin traces the rise and decline of the genre and argues that the use of satire in official Soviet art and propaganda was neither marginal nor un-theorized. The author sheds light on the theoretical texts written in the 1920s and 1930s by Anatoly Lunacharsky, the Soviet Commissar of Enlightenment, and the impact his writings had on satirists. While the Avant-Garde and Socialist Realism were necessarily forward-looking and utopian, satire afforded artists the means to examine critically past and present subjects, themes, and practice. Devastation and Laughter is the first work to bring Soviet theoretical writings on the use of satire to the attention of scholars outside of Russia. By introducing important bodies of work that have largely been overlooked in the fields of art history, film and theatre history, Annie G?rin provides a nuanced and alternative reading of early Soviet art.
