Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workers Leaving the Studio catalogs the exhibition "Workers leaving the studio. Looking away from socialist realism," curated by Mihnea Mircan in the National Gallery of Arts in Tirana, Albania in 2015. According to Mircan, "The [...] exhibition reflects on another projection machine, whose history and consequences, unlike cinema, are circumscribed by national boundaries, specific histories, and ideological configurations. The regime of production and representation of socialist realism radicalizes the violence that the creation of a new image does to its subject: it intensifies the fraught relation between refashioned representation and that which is represented. Its insistence on a particular, projective notion of reality is commensurate with the coercion of daily - cultural, social, emotional - life into a grid whose perspective lines and vanishing points carry heavy ideological charges. It enforces what it represents onto that which it represents, so that representation would replace reality."Apart from a full documentation of the exhibition by photographer Marco Mazzi, the catalogue also features theoretical and art-historical contributions, both in English and in Albanian, on socialist realist art as developed in Albania under the communist regime, as well as texts highlighting contemporary attempts to display political realities through progressive artistic practices. Artists include: Santiago Sierra, Jonas Staal, Ciprian Muresan, Irwin, Sarah Vanagt, and Armando Lulaj, with scholarly contributions by -Artan Shabani, "Parathenie" // Mihnea Mircan, "Curatorial Note" // Raino Isto, "Sali Shijaku's Zeri i Mases and the Metaphysics of Representation in Albanian Socialist Realist Painting" // Jonas Staal, "Stateless Democracy" // Suzana Varvarica Kuka, "Nje kohe e shkuar ne themel te kohes sone" // Inke Arns, "The Nigerian Connection: On NSK Passports as Escape and Entry Vehicles" // Sarah Vanagt & Tobias Hering, "Disturbed Earth" // Alban Hajdinaj, "Ilustrimi i instruksioneve ose Gjigandi dhe Shkurtabiqi" // Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei, "The Production of Hronir: Albanian Socialist Realism and After"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As market reforms and migration transformed Albania in the early 1990s, Ardit Gjebrea began mixing traditional folk music with world music and Italian pop. The resulting album, Projekt Jon (1997), provided a new model for song-Western and cosmopolitan, yet firmly rooted in the fertile soil of the nation-against a backdrop of deepening political uncertainty about the very future of Albania. The Ionian Project announced itself with the frenetic beating of the daullë and the traditional cries of Albania's highland shepherd. This sprawling collaboration between singer-songwriter Ardit Gjebrea, folk singer Hysni Zela, producer Paul Mazzolini, and a team of crack studio musicians in Italy, had an outsized ambition: to transcend the small postsocialist nation-state's borders, imaginatively crafting through sound a new home in Europe for its citizens. But as Gjebrea prepared to launch Projekt Jon, violence prompted by the collapse of widespread pyramid schemes threatened to tear Albania apart. And for the intellectuals concerned about growing cracks in the symbolic foundations of the Albanian nation-state, the album came to serve as a referendum on the nature of postsocialist citizenship.

Download or read book Audible States written by Nicholas Tochka and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Cold War, state-sponsored musical performances were central to the diplomatic agendas of the United States and the Soviet Union. But states on the periphery of the conflict also used state-funded performances to articulate their positions in the polarized global network. In Albania in particular, the postwar government invested heavily in public performances at home, effectively creating a new genre of popular music: the wildly popular light music. In Audible States: Socialist Politics and Popular Music in Albania, author Nicholas Tochka traces an aural history of Albania's government through a close examination of the development and reception of light music at Radio-Television Albania's Festival of Song. Drawing on a wide range of archival resources and over forty interviews with composers, lyricists, singers, and bureaucrats, Tochka describes how popular music became integral to governmental projects to improve society--and a major concern for both state-socialist and postsocialist regimes between 1945 and the present. Tochka's narrative begins in the immediate postwar period, arguing that state officials saw light music as a means to cultivate a modern population under socialism. As the Cold War ended, postsocialist officials turned again to light music, now hoping that these musicians could help shape Albania into a capitalist, "European" state. Interweaving archival research with ethnographic interviews, Audible States demonstrates that modern political orders do not simply render social life visible, but also audible. Incorporating insights from ethnomusicology, governmentality studies, and post-socialist studies, Audible States presents an original perspective on music and government that reveals the fluid, pervasive, but ultimately limited nature of state power in the modern world. A remarkably researched and engagingly written study, Audible States is a foundational text in the growing literature on popular music and culture in post-socialist Europe and will be of great interest for readers interested in popular music, sound studies, and the politics of the Cold War.

Book excerpt: In June and July 2014, philologist Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei and photographer Marco Mazzi undertook the Albanian Lapidar Survey, a project to map, document, and photograph the large majority of Albanian lapidars, a particular type of monument, mainly produced in the period that the communist Labor Party of Albania ruled the country (1945-1990) to commemorate the partisan victims, battles, and military units from the National Anti-Fascist Liberation War (which coincided with World War II), as well as historical figures from before the liberation and the accomplishments of socialism in Albania afterward. These lapidars, which can still be found, albeit in ever decreasing numbers, all over the country --- in cities and villages, alongside roads, in forests and on mountain passes --- are witness to an enormous expenditure of labor and resources to turn the landscape into a site of what was called "monumental propaganda." The Albanian Lapidar Survey aimed to capture these monuments as fact. The results of this project are collected into a three-volume, dual-language (English and Albanian) catalogue, under the title Lapidari. The first volume comprises a series of critical reflections on Albanian monumentality of the period 1945-1990 from a variety of perspectives, as well as historical documents and a full indexation of all inscriptions found on the documented monuments. Volumes 2 and 3 feature the photographic documentation of all 649 recorded monumental sites by photographer Marco Mazzi.Table of ContentsVolume 1: TEXTS: Vincent W.J. van Gerven Oei // Introduction -- People's Republic of Albania, Ministry of Education, Directorate of Culture // Circular to the Prefectural Executive Committee (Section Education): Regarding Lapidars (1946) -- Ramiz Alia // Report on the State and Measures for the Development and Further Revolutionizing of Monumental Propaganda (1968) -- Kujtim Buza & Kleanth Dedi // Dignified Symbols for Historical Events (1971) -- Muharrem Xhafa // Natural and Cultural Monuments during the Years of Socialism -- Gëzim Qëndro // The Thanatology of Hope -- Raino Isto // "We Raise Our Eyes and Feel as if She Rules the Sky": The Mother Albania Monument and the Visualization of National History -- Kosta Giakoumis & Christopher Lockwood // Pilgrimage Centered at Text and Memory: The Lapidar in Qukës-Pishkash -- Matthias Bickert // Lapidars and Socialist Monuments as Elements of Albania's Historic Cultural Landscapes -- Julian Bejko // About the Film Lapidari -- Ardian Vehbiu // Texts Chiseled on the Calendar: A Semiotic Reading of Inscriptions on the Commemorative Monuments for the Period of the National Liberation War -- Monument Descriptions: Index of Names, Index of Places, Index of DatesVolumes 2-3 feature the photographic documentation of all 649 recorded monumental sites by photographer Marco Mazzi.

Book Broken Narrative

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marco Mazzi
  • Publisher : punctum books

Download or read book Broken Narrative written by Marco Mazzi and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Broken Narrative provides an extensive reflection on history, politics, and contemporary art, revolving around the cornerstones of the artistic practice of Albanian artist Armando Lulaj. The core of the book is formed by and extended interview of Lulaj by Italian artist and writer Marco Mazzi. This inquiry starts in the year 1997, a year of social and political upheaval in Albania, of anarchy, controversies and emigration, of toxic seeds of neoliberalism sprouting in an already wounded country, and continues to the present day, where politics, hidden behind art forms, has practically destroyed (again) every different and possible future of the country. This book also sketches out a connection between the recent Albanian political context and contemporary art by considering the realities of Albania as essential for an understanding of the dynamics of international power in contemporary art and architecture, and the role of politics therein. Broken Narrative comes in a bilingual English-Japanese edition, in part as homage to the subtle esthetics of Japanese poetry, which has inspired many of the Lulaj's works, while equally evoking the subversive films of the Red Army, active in Japan at the turn of the 1960s and '70s. Broken Narrative contains a double preface in English by Albanian scholar Jonida Gashi and in Japanese by photographer Osamu Kanemura. Armando Lulaj was born in Tirana in 1980. He is a writer of plays, texts on risk territories, filmmaker, and producer of conflict images. He's research is orientated towards accentuating the border between economical power, fictional democracy, and social disparity in a global context. His main topics of interest remain power, corruption and institutional critique. Lulaj has participated in many international exhibitions and film festivals. His works are part of various important private and public collections. Armando Lulaj is one of the founders of DebatikCenter of Contemporary Art. Marco Mazzi (1980) is an Italian photographer and writer living and working between Florence, Tokyo, and Tirana. Mazzi studied Contemporary Literature at the University of Florence and has also studied Japanese avant-garde art and visual poetry in Japan. In 2008, Mazzi founded the non-profit organization Relational Cinema Association within the University of Waseda in Tokyo. Mazzi was photographer-in-residence at The Department of Eagles (Tirana, Albania) during the conference Pedagogies of Disaster and for the project Lapidari, and he was the stage and still photographer for Armando Lulaj's Recapitulation (2015), commissioned by the 2015 Venice Biennale' s Albanian Pavilion.
