Heyman, ed., Stockholm). Since this work appeared, the idea of visual representation of the anatomical ex tent of malignant tumours at the different stages of their develop ment has been repeatedly discussed. At its meeting in Copenhagen in July 1954, the DICC adopted as part of its programme "the realization of a clinical atlas". How ever, the time to do the planned book of illustrations was not ripe until the national committees and international organizations had officially recognized the 28 classifications of malignant tu mours at various sites as presented in the third edition of the TNM Booklet edited by M. Harmer (TNM Classification of Malig nant Tumours, 1978). This was all the more important since publi cation of the Booklet was followed in 1980 by publication of a Brochure of Checklists, edited by A.H.

As with other techniques of descriptive epidemiology, these atlases have proved valuable in identifying areas for further re sear~h employing the methods of analytical epidemiology. How ever, the various cancer atlases produceq to date have failed to pro vide a common format of presentation, which has limited their comparability and frustrated in a large measure any attempt to compare risks across national boundaries, boundaries which in terms of environmental exposures may have little meaning. In this volume, many features of cancer atlases are presented and there are discussions on the areas where moves towards standardization could greatly increase the utility of the finished product. In contrast to topographic maps, i. e., representations of natural and man-made features on the surface of the earth, thematic maps concentrate on displaying the geographical occurrence and varia tion of a single phenomenon - the "theme" of the map. The link between thematic and base mapping is rather strong as the themat ic information to be depicted is of greater value if displayed on an accurate base map. Further, the thematic map generally uses statis tical data which are frequently related to internal administrative boundaries for enumeration. The major reason for constructing a thematic map is to discover the spatial structure of the theme of the map and to then relate the structure to some aspects of the under lying environment.

Book excerpt: Regional mortality differences are one dimension of health inequalities, but its trends and determinants in Germany are widely unknown. This book examines and illustrates patterns of regional mortality in Germany—with focus on small-area differentials—and their changes over time. It identifies explanatory factors at individual and regional level. Mortality differences between eastern and western Germany exist, but small-area mortality differentials are often greater. Though the main spatial mortality patterns remain, this study provides evidence that some distinct changes in the small-area mortality patterns in Germany—especially among women—occurred within a short period of time. Mortality inequalities at younger ages and in behavior-related causes as well as differences in socioeconomic conditions contribute strongly to regional mortality differences in Germany. The book shows that the complex interplay between individual- and regional-level mortality risk factors requires a multidimensional approach to reduce regional mortality inequalities.

Book excerpt: To stimulate greater German-Chinese cooperation in the field of oncology, the Ger man Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) carried through a "Chinese-German Sympo sium on Cancer of the Liver, the Esophagus, and the Nasopharynx" in Heidelberg from 3 to 5 July 1985. These three forms of cancer were chosen as they are extremely rare in Europe but some of the most frequently found forms in China. Almost half of the roughly 260000 cases of primary liver cancer occurring annually worldwide are Chinese; of the roughly 300000 esophagus cancers occurring annually, more than half are Chinese; nasopharyngeal cancer is roughly 100 times more frequent among Chinese people than in Caucasians. Under these circumstances, it is not surprising that the Chinese guest speakers of the Heidelberg symposium - selected specialists in the three subsections of oncolo gy mentioned - were able to report about extensive experiences with patient popu lations of a size hardly imaginable in Europe. The great clinical experience of the Chinese guests was supplemented by special contributions of European experts. Thus, this volume permits a topical survey of the state of the art in these three can cers, with subsections of epidemiology, pathology, and clinical treatment. The editors wish to thank the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology (BMFT) for their encouragement and direct help in preparing and carrying through the symposium, the Management Board of the DKFZ for their generous assistance and Springer-Verlag for the publication and excellent production of this volume.
