Book Secrecy and Concealment

Download or read book Secrecy and Concealment written by Hans Kippenberg and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with secrecy and concealment in the history of mediterranean religions as pattern of social interaction. Secrecy is a powerful means in establishing identity and interaction as G. Simmel has demonstrated. Using his approach the scholars of this volume describe and explain the practical meaning of concealment in two different religious systems: in Egyptian and Greek polytheism and in Jewish, Christian, Gnostic and Shi'i monotheisms. This point of view reveals that all these religions shaped social norms concerning public and private aspects of the human self.

Book Fichtes Bildtheorie im Kontext Teil I

Download or read book Fichtes Bildtheorie im Kontext Teil I written by Christian Klotz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Fichte’s late philosophy, the concept of image becomes the central notion of the Science of Knowledge. Both the representational reference of consciousness to the objects of its experience and its relation to an absolute being which transcends all appearances are explained from the image-like character which consciousness acquires through its own activity. The present volume collects contributions which contextualize Fichte’s theory of image in various respects, focusing on its relation to pre-modern theories of image, its changing role in the development of Fichte’s thinking and its place within Fichte’s foundation of philosophy in the area between theory of truth or validity and ontology.

Book Lectures on Ancient Philosophy

Download or read book Lectures on Ancient Philosophy written by Ernst Cassirer and published by Felix Meiner Verlag. This book was released on 2022-03-21 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Rewriting the History of Ancient Greek Philosophy

Download or read book Rewriting the History of Ancient Greek Philosophy written by Victorino Tejera and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1997-11-20 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines what we can reliably know about Plato and the historical Socrates. It shows how pervasively the sources of information were biased by Pythagoreanism, Platonism, and Neoplatonism. It gives a source-critical account of how the climate of opinion in fourth-century Athens was captured by the Pythagoreans and how Speusippos's Academy also came to be pythagorized—adding definitional idealism to Pythagorean number idealism, and elevating Plato to a divine level that makes him into a coequal of Pythagoras, thus capturing Plato for Pythagoreanism. By showing how Plato's dialogues were dedramatized, dedialogized, and read or understood as if they were works expounding pythagorizing doctrine, Tejera has created a provocative reappraisal for scholars of ancient Greek philosophy.
