With this collection of photographs, I have tried to render the pulse of this wonderful city that I hope to visit again one day. The photographs are in color, natural or retouched with programs, as well as black and white. Don't expect a classic book with pictures seen as in the natural world. My photographs try to obtain the maximum of each situation by means of investigating the possibilities that technique offers and with the aim to achieve a dramatic or remarkable effect. From this point of view, some images seem non-real or even bizarre. In my opinion, reality can be boring and our imagination can obtain from the the stuff upon which create something slightly different yet more interesting.Like in all cities, I have been witness of magical moments as well as dreadful ones. I have been respectful and have not shown the protagonists of the sad images. On the other side, I have helped financially the most needed people appearing on this collection. I hope that you will like my vision of the city.

Book excerpt: Since the second half of the last century art historians, realizing that the image of Rembrandt’s work had become blurred with time, have attempted to redefine the artist’s significance both as a source of inspiration to other artists and as a great artist in his own right. In order to carry on the work started by previous generations, a group of leading Dutch art historians from the university and museum world joined forces in the late 1960s in order to study afresh the paintings usually ascribed to the artist. The researchers came together in the Rembrandt Research Project which was established to provide the art world with a new standard reference work which would serve the community of art historians for the nearby and long future. They examined the originals of all works attributed to Rembrandt taking full advantage of today’s sophisticated techniques including radiography, neutron activation autoradiography, dendrochronology and paint sample analysis — thereby gaining valuable insight into the genesis and condition of the paintings. The result of this meticulous research is laid down chronologically in the following Volumes: A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, Volume I, which deals with works from Rembrandt’s early years in Leiden(1629-1631), published in 1982. A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, Volume II, covering his first years in Amsterdam (1631-1634), published in 1986. THIS VOLUME: A Corpus of Rembrandt Paintings, Volume III, goes into his later years of reputation (1635-1642), published in 1990. Each Volume consists of a number of Introductory Chapters as well as the full Catalogue of all paintings from the given time period attributed to Rembrandt. In this catalogue each painting is discussed and examined in a detailed way, comprising a descriptive, an interpretative and a documentary section. For the authenticity evaluation of the paintings three different categories are used to divide the works in: A. Paintings by Rembrandt, B. Paintings of which Rembrandt’s authorship cannot be positively either accepted or rejected, and C. Paintings of which Rembrandt’s authorship cannot be accepted. This volume (Volume III) contains 820 pages, starting of with three introductory chapters and discussing 86 paintings. In clear and accessible explanatory text all different paintings are discussed, larded with immaculate images of each painting. Details are shown where possible, as well as the results of modern day technical imaging. In this volume important paintings including the Night Watch are discussed.

Book excerpt: The term 'professionalization' arouses controversies in academic discussion, let alone the issue of professionalization of journalism. Journalism considerably departs from the ideal model of professionalization. There is no structured knowledge that directly applies to journalists, although we can talk about defined skills and the practical principles of the journalist's profession. Considering the process of the professionalization of journalism, we can indicate three significant determinants, namely professional autonomy, separate professional standards (self-regulation principles) and serving the public interest. However, it is particularly important to ask about the condition of the journalist's profession nowadays. The ongoing technological revolution on the one hand, and the political and legal transformations accompanied by market trends, such as the tabloidization of the media (so-called infotainment) first and foremost, and citizen journalism on the other, have all generated great doubts about the status of journalists. This calls for a redefinition of the professional position and role of journalists in modern societies. All these transformations may pose a serious threat to the model of traditional journalism and the social and professional position of journalists. The book introduced here consists of four parts, presenting various aspects of professionalization of journalism. The first part treats of diverse topics concerning the essence of this issue, as well as the legal status of journalist's profession. The second part, features texts devoted to the issues of digital media. Part three deals with the disturbing phenomenon of hate speech. The main theme of the last part of the book concerns the issue of lobbying in the process of establishing intellectual property rights. The texts presented here have been written by scholars in the fields of law, media studies and political science on the one hand and practitioners (journalists) fromseveral countries of Europe on the other. The editors hope that the publication will contribute to the ongoing discussion concerning both the journalists' and journalism status, in the era of dynamic technological transformation.

Before World War I, endorsement ads were tied to patent medicine, and were left with a bad reputation when that industry was exposed as quackery. The reputation was well earned: claims of a product's curative powers sometimes ran opposite the endorser's obituary, and Lillian Russell once testified that a certain compound had made her "feel like a new man." Distrusted by the public, banished from mainstream publications, endorsements languished until around 1920, but returned with a vengeance with the growth of consumerism and modern media. Despite its questionable effectiveness, endorsement advertising is now ubiquitous, costing advertisers (and consequently consumers) hundreds of millions of dollars annually. This exploration of modern endorsement advertising--paid or unsolicited testimonials endorsing a product--follows its evolution from a marginalized, mistrusted technique to a multibillion-dollar industry. Chapters recount endorsement advertising's changing form and fortunes, from Lux Soap's co-opting of early Hollywood to today's lucrative industry dependent largely on athletes. The social history of endorsement advertising is examined in terms of changing ethical and governmental views, shifting business trends, and its relationship to the growth of modern media, while the money involved and the question of effectiveness are scrutinized. Book excerpt: The history of animated cartoons has for decades been dominated by the accomplishments of Walt Disney, giving the impression that he invented the medium. In reality, it was the work of several pioneers. Max Fleischer--inventor of the Rotoscope technique of tracing animation frame by frame over live-action footage--was one of the most prominent. By the 1930s, Fleischer and Disney were the leading producers of animated films but took opposite approaches. Where Disney reflected a Midwestern sentimentality, Fleischer presented a sophisticated urban attitude with elements of German Expressionism and organic progression. In contrast to Disney's naturalistic animation, Fleischer's violated physical laws, supporting his maxim: "If it can be done in real life, it isn't animation." As a result, Fleischer's cartoons were rough rather than refined, commercial rather than consciously artistic--yet attained a distinctive artistry through Fleischer's innovations. This book covers his life and work and the history of the studio that bore his name, with previously unpublished artwork and photographs.
