Part I gives an analytical account of the practical and ideological context, discusses design principles and describes procedures of town planning with particular reference to change in use. The emphasis is on skills of plan interpretation and an appreciation of the intellectual disposition of planners and various objective constraints confronting them. The success rates of planning applications as well as the main reasons used by the Town Planning Board for rejecting planning applications are elucidated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This insightful book provides a comprehensive survey of urban development in Hong Kong since 1841. Pui-yin Ho explores the ways in which the social, economic and political environments of different eras have influenced the city's development. From colonial governance, wartime experiences, high density development and adjustments before and after 1997 through contemporary challenges, this book explores forward-looking ideas that urban planning can offer to lead the city in the future. Evaluating the relationship between town planning and social change, this book looks at how a local Hong Kong identity emerged in the face of conflict and compromise between Chinese and European cultures. In doing so, it brings a fresh perspective to urban research, providing historical context and direction for the future development of the city. Hong Kong's urban development experience offers not only a model for other Chinese cities but also a better understanding of Asian cities more broadly. Urban studies scholars will find this an exemplary case study of a developing urban landscape. Town planners and architects will also benefit from reading this comprehensive book as it shows how Hong Kong can be taken to the next stage of urban development and modernisation.

Town Planning in Hong Kong: A Review of Planning Appeals is a thorough analysis of 50 unreported cases of the Town Planning Appeal Board on appeals against the Town Planning Board decisions concerning planning applications and review. Book Zoning and Property Rights 2nd edition

Download or read book Zoning and Property Rights 2nd edition written by Lawrence Wai-chung Lai and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 1998-04-01 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author combines the unique multidisciplinary backgrounds of an academic, a political scientist, a lawyer and an urban planner to provide the reader with a novel and challenging discussion about the economic nature of land use zoning. Besides establishing a coherent framework for zoning based on the Coasian property rights paradigm, the book offers the reader several up-to-date case studies, including the government role in assigning exclusive property rights via marine fish culture zoning in Hong Kong. The observations provided in the case studies make a valuable contribution to the reader's knowledge of both the effects of zoning systems and the value of the property rights framework for analysis. They also have important implications for future town planning exercises. Lawrence Lai has been a Lecturer in economics in the Department of Surveying at the University of Hong Kong since 1989. His research interests are property rights analyses in respect of politics, urban planning and environment. This book will be of value to students working in a wide range of subjects, including the building environment and economics, as well as property professionals and environmental planners.

Book The Port of Hong Kong

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tzu-nang Chiu
  • Publisher : Hong Kong University Press
  • Release : 1973-01-01
  • ISBN : 0856560995

Download or read book The Port of Hong Kong written by Tzu-nang Chiu and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 1973-01-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hong Kong's one great physical asset is its port. Throughout the one hundred and thirty years of the Colony's history its economy has depended to an important degree on this asset. In this book Dr T. N. Chiu describes and explains the pattern of port development in Hong Kong, where he sees the present structure of port activities as the product of a long period of economic, demographic and political developments. One of the most persistent themes is that in the laissez-faire economic environment that has prevailed in the Colony, port development is due less to internal demand than to external stimulant, which keeps changing the port's relative locational value. Development since the industrialization of the 1950S represents the culminating stage in the struggle to stay high in the emerging hierarchy of ports. The author gives a balanced estimate of what has been accomplished and evaluates the planning of specialized port development in the context of the recent technological revolution in port activities. Hong Kong's economy has in common with the trend in most developing economies a firm orientation towards overseas markets, but the more or less unique circumstance in the Colony make this book particularly welcome. It will be of interest to geographers, to all concerned with the ways in which a developing economy adjusts to changing conditions, and to those with a particular interest in the phenomenal development of Hong Kong.

Book Planning for Public Transport Accessibility

Download or read book Planning for Public Transport Accessibility written by Carey Curtis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together a comparative analysis of the accessibility by public transport of 23 cities spanning four continents, this book provides a "hands-on" introduction to the evolution, rationale and effectiveness of a new generation of accessibility planning tools that have emerged since the mid-2000s. The Spatial Network Analysis for Multimodal Urban Transport Systems (SNAMUTS) tool is used as a practical example to demonstrate how city planners can find answers as they seek to improve public transport accessibility. Uniquely among the new generation of accessibility tools, SNAMUTS has been designed for multi-city comparisons. A range of indicators are employed in each city including: the effectiveness of the public transport network; the relationship between the transport network and land use activity; who gets access within the city; and how resilient the city will be. The cities selected enable a comparison between cities by old world–new world; public transport modes; governance approach; urban development constraints. The book is arranged along six themes that address the different planning challenges cities confront. Richly illustrated with maps and diagrams, this volume acts as a comprehensive sourcebook of accessibility indicators and a snapshot of current policy making around the world in the realm of strategic planning for land use transport integration and the growth of public transport. It provides a deeper understanding of the complexity, opportunities and challenges of twenty-first-century accessibility planning.

Book Land Administration and Practice in Hong Kong Fifth Edition

Download or read book Land Administration and Practice in Hong Kong Fifth Edition written by Roger Nissim and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to explain both the historical context and current practices of land administration in Hong Kong. Although Hong Kong has an open and business-friendly environment, it is underpinned by a socialist leasehold land tenure system. The government is landlord to virtually all land and so it plays a pivotal role in the administration of this scare, and therefore, valuable resource. As land administration is governed by private contract law rather than legislation, it is constantly evolving with the courts handing down significant decisions on a regular basis. Government practice has to respond to this, as well as the community’s concern on how best land can be administered. The fifth edition has some substantial and important updates which should continue to be useful to both students and practitioners of surveying, architecture, planning and law, as well as the wider business and financial community.
