Book Kovels American Art Pottery

Download or read book Kovels American Art Pottery written by Ralph M. Kovel and published by Random House Reference. This book was released on 1993 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ralph and Terry Kovel are proud to present the most authoritative and current art pottery book on the market, Kovels' American Art Pottery: The Collector's Guide to Makers, Marks, and Factory Histories. After the Kovels began collecting American art pottery in the 1960s, they decided to research and write their first book on the subject, The Kovels' Collector's Guide to American Art Pottery (Crown, 1974). Since that time, art pottery has become one of the most important and popular areas of collecting in this country. Today, many pieces are still very affordable, and collectors everywhere are searching for art pottery treasures. Many other pieces are represented in museum collections, and some pieces are selling for thousands of dollars. The Kovels have never stopped researching the history of art pottery factories and products, and have been continuously gathering new or previ-ously unpublished information from rediscovered catalogs and records, archaeological digs, and family histories. And now, they offer the most com-plete and up-to-date pottery book available, Kovels'American Art Pottery. Written with the collector in mind, this book emphasizes all the information needed for an under-standing of art pottery factories and their wares. The Kovels list large and small art pottery firms and include a general history of each one. Makers, artists and their backgrounds, artists' and factory marks, dates, and lines of pottery are all described in detail. The Kovels discuss the well-known factories such as Rookwood, Weller, and Grueby, as well as the lesser-known or recently recognized potteries such as Avon, Radford, and Zanesville. More than 215 potteries are listed here fromA to Z. There is also a full section on tile factories following the art pottery portion of the book. Kovels' American Art Pottery is extensively illustrated with more than 700 beautiful color and black-and-white photographs of art pottery pieces. Also included are fascinating historical photographs and more than 1,000 illustrations of actual artist and factory marks. The thorough range of photographs and illustrations will enable any collector to identify a piece of art pottery by its decoration, shape, color, or identifying mark. And to complete this valuable reference, a bibliography is provided for all those who wish further information about the historical aspects of a pottery. Kovels' American Art Pottery is an indispensable book for all collectors, dealers, museums, or antiques enthusiasts who wish to know all they can about this exquisite art form.

Book The Mosaic Tile Company

Download or read book The Mosaic Tile Company written by Larisa Harper and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1894, the Mosaic Tile Company was the dream of two ceramic pioneers who intended to manufacture innovative ceramic mosaic murals while also dominating the utilitarian market. One of the largest such companies in the United States at the time, MTC's most significant contribution to the burgeoning Ohio pottery industry was the development of innovative and varied proprietary tile production and installation methods. Compared to its emphasis on mosaic murals, MTC's utilitarian and giftware goods were produced in limited quantities and were not well received at the time, making them rarer today. This book chronicles the history of ceramic creativity in Zanesville, Ohio, from its earliest days as a bustling town before the Great Depression through its recovery in the 1960s. It examines the Mosaic Tile Company's whole history, the bygone details of this long-lost business, its products and its employees, and incorporates images and postcards illustrating its products in each chapter.

Book Fired by Ideals

Download or read book Fired by Ideals written by Suzanne Baizerman and published by Pomegranate. This book was released on 2000 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arts and Crafts Movement exerted a profound influence on early-twentieth-century America, not only in the applied and decorative arts but also in the area of social reform. Standing at this intersection of art and reform were American art potteries that taught ceramics skills to working-class women as a means of securing income, restoring health, and/or uplifting the spirit. Like its better known and more successful predecessors -- the Marblehead Pottery in Massachusetts, the Newcomb Pottery in New Orleans, and the Paul Revere Pottery in Boston (home of the "Saturday Evening Girls") -- the Arequipa Pottery in Fairfax, California, had fascinating origins, and it produced distinctive wares that today are prized by collectors. Fired by Ideals: Arequipa Pottery and the Arts & Crafts Movement tells the story of the Arequipa Sanatorium and Pottery, whose roots lie in the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire. The dust and smoke from the disaster prompted an outbreak of tuberculosis, which afflicted "working girls" in particular. In 1911, a progressive physician, Dr. Philip King Brown, founded a treatment center in rural Marin County, north of San Francisco, where these women could get the rest and medical care they needed, as well as engage in a therapeutic and marketable pursuit: the manufacture of art pottery. In addition to its engaging historical narrative supported by dozens of vintage photographs, the book employs technical illustrations and beautiful full-color reproductions to examine the production process at Arequipa and the types of pottery made there.
