It has been disseminating findings of its studies to policymakers in the public and private sectors and ultimately to the public at large. Water resources is one of the areas of strong public interest in Nepal. It is cons- ered a potent engine of economic growth. Its optimal use is dependent on, among other things, the cooperation among the riparian countries, especially India and Bangladesh. Water resources development is one of the subjects in which the Ins- tute has been engaged since its beginning by undertaking studies through national professionals and joint studies on the water resources of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna river basins with policy research institutes from India and Bangladesh. In order to help policymakers to develop long-term perspectives of the need for cooperation for optimal use of water available in the tributaries of the Ganges, the Institute was involved in a major track-two exercise for over five years during the 1990s. The Institute has been undertaking a series of exercises in the form of p- lication and dissemination of study findings in the field since the early 1990‘s. In that series, this book is the latest one and is published in collaboration with Springer Science + Business Media BV, Dordrecht, The Netherlands.

Book Water Resources Cooperation between India and Nepal

Download or read book Water Resources Cooperation between India and Nepal written by Ms Monika Mandal and published by KW Publishers Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2016-05-15 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trans-boundary rivers between Nepal and India have long signified both cooperation and dispute. Though both countries are highly interested in mutual cooperation for the development of the shared rivers, their attempt to bring things to a successful solution has been hampered by debate. Several treaties and agreements have been signed over time by these countries, such as the Koshi Agreement, the Mahakali Treaty, the Gandak Agreement, etc. While some of these have generated positive outcomes, others are languishing, for reasons political rather than technical. Nepal is not able to harness its water resources, while India is seeking cooperation in order to utilise the shared water. Lack of trust, negotiations and compromise along with vested political interests have affected the degree of cooperation over shared rivers between India and Nepal. To make cooperation more fruitful, the two countries first need to build trust, identify the merits and demerits, compromise for the sake of the common good, share information with each other and implement the mutually agreed upon cooperation package. The essays in this volume bring together a spectrum of viewpoints on this issue. This volume is the outcome of an international conference on this subject organised by the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies, Kolkata (MAKAIAS) in collaboration with the B. P. Koirala India-Nepal Foundation, Embassy of India.

Book South Asia Trade and Energy Security

Download or read book South Asia Trade and Energy Security written by Narottam P. Banskota and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2012 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, policy makers in both developed and developing countries are pursuing regionalization as a means to achieve easier market access, economies of scale, and welfare gains. South Asia Trade and Energy Security explains how regional economic cooperation in trade and energy security could help facilitate the economic transformation of the region, reducing poverty and expanding production. Currently, intra-regional trade in South Asia is constrained by tariff and non-tariff barriers. A fully- functional free trade area as envisaged in the South Asian Free Trade Area agreement has yet to be realized. This book explains the current patterns and limitations of energy trade between countries in South Asia, and how the growing demand for energy could be met by working closely with energy rich Iran, Burma, and Central Asian countries. Cross-border cooperation between India and China, Chinese investment in Tibet and Xinxiang, and water relations are also discussed. Policymakers, geopolitical strategists, and academics working in Asian Studies will appreciate this detailed analysis of how globalization and regional cooperation in trade and energy are playing a transformative role in South Asia's economic development.

Book Water Crisis in India

Download or read book Water Crisis in India written by Ed. K.R. Gupta and published by Atlantic Publishers & Dist. This book was released on 2008 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water is a prime natural resource and a basic necessity for sustaining life on earth. Supplying adequate amount of potable water to the global population is a gigantic task in the wake of growing industrial and domestic needs. The threat of climate change and global warming which has aggravated the problem of water shortage is of particular concern to India as we are largely dependent on glaciers and rainfall for water supply. The United Nations World Water Development Report, Water: A Shared Responsibility emphasizes the need for good governance to meet the ever-increasing demand for water. The report asserts that mismanagement, corruption, lack of appropriate institutions, bureaucratic inertia and paucity of investment in human and physical sources mar water management today. The situation calls for right policy decisions and adoption of sustainable practices. The problem is acute in India because of its high population density, space and time variability of rainfall and increasing depletion and contamination of its surface and groundwater resources. Most water resources in India are contaminated by sewage and agricultural run-off. Besides, overuse of pesticides and chemicals in agriculture is the primary cause of groundwater pollution in India. Further, uneven water distribution across the country is another aspect of water problem. A large area of the country is water deficit whereas a small part is bestowed with abundance of water. This has led to inter-state conflicts. The present anthology contains well researched articles by eminent scholars who have deeply analysed the problem and its various implications. Major factors responsible for the problem have been studied in detail and some measures have been suggested to retrieve the situation. The book will serve as a reference source for students, researchers and policymakers and all those concerned with an ensured supply of water across the country.

Book The Ganges Water Diversion Environmental Effects and Implications

Download or read book The Ganges Water Diversion Environmental Effects and Implications written by M. Monirul Qader Mirza and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-02-03 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with environmental effects on both sides of the border between Bangladesh and India caused by the Ganges water diversion. This issue came to my attention in early 1976 when news media in Bangladesh and overseas, began publications of articles on the unilateral withdrawal of a huge quantity of water from the Ganges River through the commissioning of the Farakka Barrage in India. I first pursued the subject professionally in 1984 while working as a contributor for Bangladesh Today, Holiday and New Nation. During the next two decades, I followed the protracted hydro-political negotiations between the riparian countries in the Ganges basin, and I traveled extensively to observe the environmental and ecological changes in Bangladesh as well as India that occurred due to the water diversion. The Ganges, one of the longest rivers of the world originates at the Gangotri glacier in the Himalayas and flows across the plains of North India. Eventually the river splits into two main branches and empties into the Bay of Bengal. The conflict of diversion and sharing of the Ganges water arose in the middle of the last century when the government of India decided to implement a barrage at Farakka to resolve a navigation problem at the Kolkata Port.
