Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will give you a lighthearted view of an American who cannot speak or read any Korean but chooses to travel to volunteer and teach English for one month in the city of Gwangju in South Korea. The author returned the following year to volunteer in Seoul, at the Jogyesa Temple. This temple is the headquarters for the largest order of Korean Buddhism, the Jogye Order. Along with her struggles over the language, culture, and lifestyle, the author includes her findings on the achievements of today's South Korea. As soon as I stepped off the airplane, I realized I was not home anymore. "English? English?" I spoke to anyone who passed by me. What have I gotten myself into on this trip? I stared desperately into the blank faces that watched me while I walked, chattering to myself. I decided that I would not have a Hangeul enlightenment and suddenly be able to read the unfamiliar cryptic lines, curves on all the walls, symbols, and doorways. (It is also spelled Hangul or Han'gŭl, in an alphabetic system used for writing the Korean language. Hangeul means great script in Korean. 'Han' means great, and 'geul' means script.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Korea and Her Neighbours, Vol. 2: A Narrative of Travel, With an Account of the Vicissitudes and Position of the Country Fortified as to my project by the cort approval of the Governor, the courtesy Of the Telegraph Department, and the Singular splendour of the weather, I left Wladivostok by a red sunrise in a small steamer, which accomplished the 60 miles to Possiet Bay in seven hours, landing us in a deep inlet of clear water and white sand, soon to be closed by ice, at the foot Of low and absolutely barren hills fringing off into sandy knolls, where Koreans with their ox-carts awaited the steamer. A well-spread tea-table at the house of the Russian postmaster was very welcome. Such a strong-looking family I had seldom seen, but afterwards I found that size and strength are characteristic of the Russian settlers in Primorsk. Book excerpt: Welcome to the desert island of Mui, where a paid vacation to paradise is nothing short of a disaster in this “mordantly witty novel [that] reads like a highly literary, ultra–incisive thriller (Refinery29). Jungle is a cutting–edge travel agency specializing in tourism to destinations devastated by disaster and climate change. And until she found herself at the mercy of a predatory colleague, Yona was one of their top representatives. Now on the verge of losing her job, she’s given a proposition: take a paid “vacation” to the desert island of Mui and pose as a tourist to assess the company’s least profitable holiday. When she uncovers a plan to fabricate an extravagant catastrophe, she must choose: prioritize the callous company to whom she’s dedicated her life, or embrace a fresh start in a powerful new position? An eco–thriller with a fierce feminist sensibility, The Disaster Tourist introduces a fresh new voice to the United States that engages with the global dialogue around climate activism, dark tourism, and the #MeToo movement.
