This pressure and persistency on the part of the Japanese--no doubt magnified and made the most of by the Peking Government--' has caused no little offence to Korea. Rather than give Japan any partial advantages, and influenced by the threatening position of her very powerful northern neighbor, Russia, as well as by the friendly advice of China, Korea very properly concluded, in 1882, that the auspicious time had at last arrived when it was to her own advantage to emerge from her seclusion and open her gates to foreign intercourse, as Japan had already done but a few years before, and thus at last to enter into the comity of nations. I give these details that we may the better understand the motives which have impelled Korea forward in the path she has so recently elected to follow. China is generally supposed to have professed and maintained the claims of suzerainty, or control, over the kingdom of Korea for many centuries past, and this assumption is made manifest in the late negotiations carried on with Korea by Com. Schufeldt, under the good auspices of his former friend, Li-hung-chang. On the part of Japan, ever jealous of China's increasing influence in Korea, and annoyed at the preference given to Chinese instead of Japanese aid, this concession by Korea to China has never been acknowledged; still, to a degree it is undoubtedly accepted by Korea, and annually their Embassy, accompanied by a few privileged traders, repairs to the principal fairs held in Manchuria a portion continuing on to the Chinese capital, Peking, where audiences are held at the Chinese court. Book excerpt: East Asia from 1400 to 1850 was a vibrant web of connections, and the southern coast of the Korean peninsula participated in a maritime world that stretched to Southeast Asia and beyond. Within this world were Japanese pirates, traders, and fishermen. They brought things to the Korean peninsula and they took things away. The economic and demographic structures of Kyongsang Province had deep and wide connections with these Japanese traders. Social and political clashes revolving around the Japan House in Pusan reveal Korean mentalities towards the Japanese connection. This study seeks to define 'Korea' by examining its frontier with Japan. The guiding problems are the relations between structures and agents and the self-definitions reached by pre-modern Koreans in their interaction with the Japanese. Case studies range from demography to taxation to trade to politics to prostitution. The study draws on a wide base of primary sources for Korea and Japan and introduces the problems that animate modern scholarship in both countries. It offers a model approach for Korea's northern frontier with China and shows that the peninsula was and is a complex brocade of differing regions. The book will be of interest to anyone concerned with pre-1900 East Asia, Korea in particular, and especially Korea's relations with the outside world. Anyone interested in early-modern Japan and its external relations will also find it essential reading.

Rather, far from aiming at seclusion, Japan's diplomacy in the seventeenth century was orchestrated to achieve certain objectives, both outside the country and inside it. The aim was to build Japan into an autonomous center of its own. Since the country was "closed," elaborate and expensive foreign embassies were obliged to make the journey to Edo. Countries which were perceived as potential threats, such as Portugal and Spain, were excluded from this process. Only those such as the Chinese and the Dutch, with whom trade was recognized as desirable, were allowed a supervised presence in Japan itself. Closing the gates to Japan was not the object. Rather, carefully judging just when they should be open and shut was the aim.

Book excerpt: In the half century after 1945, South Korea went from an impoverished, largely rural nation ruled by a succession of authoritarian regimes to a prosperous, democratic industrial society. No less impressive was the country's transformation from a nation where a majority of the population had no formal education to one with some of the world's highest rates of literacy, high school graduates, and university students. Drawing on their premodern and colonial heritages as well as American education concepts, South Koreans have been largely successful in creating a schooling system that is comprehensive, uniform in standard, and universal. The key to understanding this educational transformation is South Korean society's striking, nearly universal preoccupation with schooling-what Korean's themselves call their "education fever." This volume explains how Koreans' concern for achieving as much formal education as possible appeared immediately before 1945 and quickly embraced every sector of society. Through interviews with teachers, officials, parents, and students and an examination of a wide range of written materials in both Korean and English, Michael Seth explores the reasons for this social demand for education and how it has shaped nearly every aspect of South Korean society. He also looks at the many problems of the Korean educational system: the focus on entrance examinations, which has tended to reduce education to test preparation; the overheated competition to enter prestige schools; the enormous financial burden placed on families for costly private tutoring; the inflexibility created by an emphasis on uniformity of standards; and the misuse of education by successive governments for political purposes.
