Book Korea in the 21st Century

Download or read book Korea in the 21st Century written by Yang-tʻaek Im and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Korea now stands at an important crossroads for national development and prosperity in the era of globalisation. It is quite natural to raise the following questions: What trends will be evident in the global economic order of the 21st century? Will the US be able to maintain its economic dominance of the global economy? What will be the future choice of Japan in the on-going trends? Will the main international political and economic partner of Japan be the US or will it be China? Or will Japan opt for a more independent path? What will be the role of Japan in the 21st Century? The economic centre of the world is moving from the Atlantic to the Pacific, from Europe and the US to Asia. Russia has already pronounced itself to be an 'Eurasia' and US has declared Asia to be a region after attempting to break away from it. The main purpose of this book is to propose some strategies for Korea's survival and prosperity in the 21st century and draw possible lessons for the other developing countries, derived from the past economic development strategy and various reforms to solve the recent economic crisis.

Book Bringing Government into the 21st Century

Download or read book Bringing Government into the 21st Century written by Tina George Karippacheril and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume—a collaborative work between the World Bank’s Global Governance Practice and a team of researchers working with the Korean Development Institute—is dedicated to the proposition that there is much that can be learned from a careful and nuanced assessment of Korea’s experience with e-governance. It seeks to draw lessons both from the large reservoir of experience as to what has worked, as well as the more limited and isolated examples of what has not. In particular, it seeks to achieve two objectives. The first is to accurately understand, capture and distill the key dimensions of Korea’s e-governance experience so that it can be properly understood and appreciated. Towards this end, some of the world’s leading experts on Korea’s e-governance experience have been engaged in its preparation, and their conclusions have been carefully vetted and reviewed by other leading scholars of the role of IT systems within government. The goal is to avoid flip generalizations or characterizations, such as 'political will is important' or 'it is important to embed e-governance within a broader strategy to develop a domestic IT industry,' but to truly understand the complex interplay between differing political, economic and bureaucratic interests and how they shaped decisions about developing the technological and human infrastructure that would support Korea’s successful thrust to be the world’s leading nation in this area. The second is to ponder the lessons learned and what did and did not work from Korea’s experience for other developing countries seeking to strengthen the role of information technology within their public sectors.

Book The Korean Economy

Download or read book The Korean Economy written by Hyung-Koo Lee and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1996-01-25 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Korean Economy, Hyung-Koo Lee, formerly South Korea's Minister of Labor, chronicles South Korea's economic development from 1945–1994 and the public policies that have shaped that development. In the past, the South Korean government supported protectionist policies. Mr. Lee, arguing that these policies no longer serve the long-term interest of South Korea's economy, supports the allowance of greater private-sector initiatives, a fundamental paradigm shift in South Korea's economic policy. He argues that if South Korea is to become a major economic power, the government should withdraw from the economic front line. He also provides a succinct analysis of the vast economic potential of a reunified Korea and discusses the pros and cons of two alternative scenarios for the South Korean economy.

Book Korea in the 21st Century

Download or read book Korea in the 21st Century written by Seung-Ho Joo and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2001 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the second millennium, Koreans face multiple challenges at home and abroad. South Korea is still in the throes of democratisation and economic reforms, while North Korea faces food shortages and other economic difficulties. The two Koreas need to manage the unification process so as to bring about national harmony and promote economic prosperity. The Korean people need to devise a new security strategy for a unified Korea to ensure its survival and independence in the early 21st century. This collection is divided into three parts, and each addresses an important issue area confronting the Korean people in the 21st century. Part I examines South Korea's democratisation and economic reforms against the backdrop of the East Asian financial crisis. Part II discusses the problems and prospects for inter-Korean relations and the characteristics of North Korea's foreign policy behaviour. Part III analyses South Korea's security relations with the four major powers at the turn of the new millennium. All chapters are written by renowned experts in their fields and offer valuable insights into the dynamics of the two Korean's domestic politics and foreign policy.

Book Re Inventing Africa s Development

Download or read book Re Inventing Africa s Development written by Jong-Dae Park and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book analyses the development problems of sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) from the eyes of a Korean diplomat with knowledge of the economic growth Korea has experienced in recent decades. The author argues that Africa's development challenges are not due to a lack of resources but a lack of management, presenting an alternative to the traditional view that Africa's problems are caused by a lack of leadership. In exploring an approach based on mind-set and nation-building, rather than unity – which tends to promote individual or party interests rather than the broader country or national interests – the author suggests new solutions for SSA's economic growth, inspired by Korea's successful economic growth model much of which is focused on industrialisation. This book will be of interest to researchers, policymakers, NGOs and governmental bodies in economics, development and politics studying Africa's economic development, and Korea's economic growth model.

Book Nation Building in South Korea

Download or read book Nation Building in South Korea written by Gregg Brazinsky and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2009-09-14 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazinsky explains why South Korea was one of the few postcolonial nations that achieved rapid economic development and democratization by the end of the twentieth century. He contends that a distinctive combination of American initiatives and Korean agency enabled South Korea's stunning transformation. Expanding the framework of traditional diplomatic history, Brazinsky examines not only state-to-state relations, but also the social and cultural interactions between Americans and South Koreans. He shows how Koreans adapted, resisted, and transformed American influence and promoted socioeconomic change that suited their own aspirations. Ultimately, Brazinsky argues, Koreans' capacity to tailor American institutions and ideas to their own purposes was the most important factor in the making of a democratic South Korea.

Book The Rise of Korean Leadership

Download or read book The Rise of Korean Leadership written by G. Ikenberry and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-25 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Korea has emerged as a new middle power playing a significant role in a wide range of important global issue areas and supporting liberal international order with its leadership diplomacy. The growing role played by new powers like Korea calls into question the prevailing view that global governance is polarized with emerging powers challenging the liberal international order established by the United States and its European allies after World War II. As the case of Korea shows, large developing countries like the BRICS are not the only emerging powers active in global governance. Newly developed or high income developing countries like South Korea, Turkey and Mexico are also active emerging powers, taking new initiatives, setting agendas and mediating conflicts between rival groups on the global stage. Because these high income developing countries have advanced under and benefited from the liberal international order, they see a great stake in its stability and show a willingness to protect it. "Liberal internationalist" developing countries are joining the expanding list of middle powers who contribute to the maintenance of liberal international order as niche players and system supporters.
