Download or read book Korean Arts of the Eighteenth Century written by Hongnam Kim and published by Weatherhill, Incorporated. This book was released on 1993 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The arts of Korea - painting, screens, furniture, ceramics, lacquerware, and sculpture - entered a latterday golden age in the 18th century. This book, and the exhibition organized by The Asia Society Galleries that it documents, illuminate three key aspects of 18th century Korean art: the royal arts, emblematic of the authority and ceremonial dignity of the king; arts of leisure and self-cultivation, patronized by an emerging class of wealthy professionals and artist-craftsmen; and religious art, which included Confucian, shamanic, and Buddhist lineages."--Googlebooks.

Book In Grand Style

Download or read book In Grand Style written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Korea, life milestones have traditionally been celebrated with festivals and feasts. Such celebrations helped to define and honor an individual's identity. Based on a 2009 exhibition at the National Museum of Korea, the exhibition at the Asian Art Museum that this book documents incorporates new findings and researches. Co-organized by the Asian and the NMK, the show--which opens in San Francisco in October 2013--presents rare and exquisite objects drawn from some ten museums in Korea. Highlights include a ten-panel folding screen of Celebrations on the Crown Prince's Birth from 1874, a portrait of Emperor Gojong from 1897, a Royal Procession to the Royal Tomb at Hwaseong from 1795, and kings' thrones and palanquins. The book documents Korea's taste for splendor and grandeur. It explores the meaning and obligations of kingship, the elite culture of the court and the upper class during the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910), and the complex roles of women in organizing and presenting elaborate celebrations, in the grandest of styles

Book Flowering Plums and Curio Cabinets

Download or read book Flowering Plums and Curio Cabinets written by Sunglim Kim and published by Korean Studies of the Henry M.. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social and economic rise of the chungin class ("middle people" who ranked between the yangban aristocracy and commoners) during the late Chosŏn period (1700-1910) ushered in a world of materialism and commodification of painting and other art objects. Generally overlooked in art history, the chungin contributed to a flourishing art market, especially for ch'aekkori, a new form of still life painting that experimented with Western perspective and illusionism, and a reimagined style of the traditional plum blossom painting genre. Sunglim Kim examines chungin artists and patronage of the visual arts, and their commercial transactions, artistic exchange with China and Japan, and historical writings on art. She also explores the key role of men of chungin background in preserving Korean art heritage in the tumultuous twentieth century, including the work of the modern Korean collector and historian O Se-ch'ang, who memorialized many chungin painters and calligraphers. Revealing a vivid picture of a complex art world, Flowering Plums and Curio Cabinets presents a major reconsideration of late Chosŏn society and its material culture. Lushly illustrated, it will appeal to scholars of Korea and East Asia, art history, visual culture, and social history. A William Sangki and Nanhee Min Hahn Book Art History Publication Initiative.
