Book Technology Transfer and International Production

Download or read book Technology Transfer and International Production written by Jin W. Cyhn and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2002-03-27 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book analyses the technology development efforts of Korea's electronics industry (the country's largest exporter). It asks how the Korean electronics industry was able to develop, both in terms of production and technology, despite low inflows of licensing and foreign direct investments. The books argues that the key to its spectacular growth has been through its participation and learning from an inter-firm arrangement called original equipment manufacturing arrangement (OEM). A number of firm-level case studies on the Korean electronics industry support this argument. The role of the government, especially related to its technology policy, has also been analysed. The government was effective in providing financial incentives for the firms' technological upgrading efforts, but its supplying of direct technological assistance had limited success. Overall, this book argues that contrary to many previous studies, the role of multinational enterprises has been significant in the development of Korea's electronics industry, and that they have acted as a 'technological tutor' for Korea through OEM"--P. xiv.tributors, world 0̲.

Book Routledge Revivals The World Electronics Industry 1990

Download or read book Routledge Revivals The World Electronics Industry 1990 written by Daniel Todd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990, this book provides an overview of the global distribution of the electronics industry and the structural factors which promoted this distribution by the end of the 1980s. Regarded as a ‘flagship’ sector in both advanced and developing countries, the electronics industry is encouraged by governments everywhere. Covering both the civilian and the military sides of the industry, Professor Todd reflects on the future of civilian electronics in the light of its global segmentation, and hints at the fundamental role of governments in the unfolding of both civilian and defence-electronics developments. He also endorses the overwhelming significance of strategies being played by electronics enterprises in both the USA and Japan.

Book Catching Up Crisis and Industrial Upgrading

Download or read book Catching Up Crisis and Industrial Upgrading written by Dieter Ernst and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses a puzzle related to catching-up: how is it possible that a country that has established a broad, export-oriented industrial base at record speed, remains vulnerable to the vicissitudes of international finance and currency markets? I argue that the Korean model that was tremendously successful during the catching-up phase, has now reached its limits for two reasons: it generates unsustainable high debt-equity ratios, and it is out of touch with current industrial upgrading requirements. The analysis centers on the co-evolution of industry structure and firm behavior. The focus is on the role of technological learning for the development of the electronics industry, a main carrier of Korea's successful late industrialization. It is shown that a heavy reliance on credit and an extremely unbalanced industry structure have given rise to a narrow knowledge base and a sticky pattern of specialization. Catching-up has focused on capacity and international market share expansion for homogeneous, mass-produced products such as TV sets. monitors, DRAM and displays (commodities); very little upgrading has occurred into higher-end and rapidly growing market segments for differentiated products and services that require flexible production (e.g., design-intensive ICs and computer products, software and Internet services). Such truncated upgrading is one important reason for Korea's vulnerability to the financial and currency crisis.

Book Key Determinants of National Development

Download or read book Key Determinants of National Development written by Kwaku Appiah-Adu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For those wishing to acquire knowledge on national development issues, this comprehensive compendium traverses a spectrum of subjects that the audience ought to be well acquainted with. The Editors provide instructive findings regarding national development, economic growth and their determinants, but they also offer historical perspectives on the subject and the implications for developing countries. The book addresses a suite of critical themes regarded by development experts to be germane in considering the pertinence of policies and their effective execution. These seven general thematic areas are explored: ¢ Leadership, governance, policy and strategy ¢ Public sector and public financial management ¢ Culture, institutions and people ¢ Natural resources ¢ Science, technology and infrastructure ¢ Private sector and financial markets ¢ Marketing, branding and service delivery This thematic approach enables the contributors to explore the impact of the constituents of each subject area on national development, within the context of a developing economy. The significance of the findings for the relevant stakeholders is consequently reviewed. The combination of theory and practice makes the book and its contents unique.

Book excerpt: Focusing on the formation of the Korean economic system, this book presents a fascinating and comprehensive analysis of economic development outside of the traditional neo-classical, developmental-state and dependency perspectives. It examines in detail the evolution of institutions that contributed to economic growth and the formation and the workings of the economic system. With an emphasis on the interaction between government, private institutions (Chaebol and financial institutions) and the influence of Japan, it offers one of the most stimulating and distinctive views of Korean economic development to date. It will be of key interest to scholars and researchers of financial growth and development, Asian finance, and regional and heterodox economics.
